Was it the heat or the wine???

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

I have recently begun noticing improvement in my left leg  (hurray!!!)  Then I went to a lovely dinner with a very large group of friends (28) tonight.  We were all pretty packed in this little restaurant, and the wine was flowing freely too.  I only had one glass, but I was feeling dizzy and hot.  After a couple of hours, we all started to get up to leave, and I noticed I could not move my left leg AT ALL.  I also noticed I was having trouble with my right leg.  I have been trying NOT to notice right side symptoms for the last several months now...

Anyway, when I got home I did one of those tests the neurologist gives us:  sit down, and lift one leg up, then the other.  Sure enough, I can barely lift my right leg (the one I was trying not to notice had MS type issues), and I cannot lift the left side at all.  I'm sure it will resolve fairy quickly, but that is such a bummer.  One of my good friends has a wine cellar, and he always brings enough for everyone.  No more for me I guess...

The pins and needles are more intense too.  Gonna be a fun night!
I hope you all are smarter than I am.  I should have known this would be a problem, 'cause I think it happened last time too.

Bye for now,
Tammy

Hi, Tammy. I really don't think a single glass of wine could cause those problems. What I do think happened was that you got too hot. Overheating can wreak all sorts of havoc in MSers, and can easily make symptoms worse.

I hope things are back to normal by now. Next time, enjoy your glass of wine, but make sure you're in a well-ventilated place and not dressed too warmly. If need be, go out in the winter air for a few minutes.

Overheating is a huge issue in MS, but it's also one of the easiest to solve. Good luck with this.

Tammy,

I would think it was the heat as well (or is it possible you might be coming down with something)?

My symptoms flare pretty bad when I'm exposed to heat and will last until my body stabilizes. Like with the MRI I had last week, I noticed an increase in my tremor's, twitches and jerks in the MRI but as soon as I got up to leave I noticed my eye/face pain was aggravated as well - it hurt all day until the next morning.

I hope you are feeling better today. If it doesn't resolve today, I'd call your doctor.

I feel much better this morning.  It probably was the heat.  The last time I was at that restaurant, I felt sick too.  The same friend that has the wine cellar loves this place, because they let him bring his own wine along.  It probably was the heat, because my husband and I had a bottle of wine between us a couple of months ago- but no real problems then.

Thanks for your input ;o)

I would certainly agree that one glass of wine wouldn't hurt, infact the research of 80000 nurses showed that one glass per day with 2 rest days per week actually helps you into old age.

So, it wasn't the wine, and most likely it was the heat, however, just wondering Tammy, and I hope you don't mind me asking this, exactly what had you eaten that day including at the restaurant?

I don't remember what I ate during the day.  We ate chines food at dinner.  I remember that I almost ate shellfish- which I am deathly allergic to, but the person next to me knew that the noodles had shrimp in them- so he saved me from eating it.  (Whew!)  Then after we got me a new plate, I ate some sweet and sour pork, green beans, and white rice.

That's all I can remember.  I am feeling much better though.

Very lucky that your friend saved you from the shrimp.

I have done a quick search on the nutritional values of fried sweet and sour pork and it does appear to be very high in saturated fat depending on the restaurant.  http://www.livestrong.com/article/539489-nutrition-in-fried-sweet-sour-pork/

I remember well several months ago helping my kids eat a bucket of KFC and within two hours experiencing an amazing amount of heightened symptom activity. Of course I have also experienced heightened symptom activity without eating KFC or similar high saturated fat foods.

I believe that there is a relationship between our symptoms and what we eat. Whilst we can't prove either way if it was the wine, the heat, or the food I do find the whole trigger thing fascinating.

That is interesting...  I had never thought of food as being a trigger.  Be that as it may, I am revamping my diet anyway- but not because of MS.  I am changing my diet because I need to lose weight, and unfortunately, wine and fried foods don't help with this issue :o)

I'm going to do some research on triggers though.

Oh, I also found out I have a sinus infection- so that probably affected me
the other night too.

Take care everyone,
Tammy
