Weird Eye Swelling

Hi folks, happy weekend! I was wondering if anyone here has ever experienced eye swelling for no apparent reason.

Twice in the last 4 weeks I have had one eyelid swell dramatically. It only lasts about 24 hours and both times I have been at home. There is no pain or redness and very little itching. It doesn't water or have discharge and since there is no sinus pressure or stuffiness I don't think it's an allergy.

The inner corner swells, the upper eyelid puffs out and the swelling continues under the eye almost to the tip of my nose.

I know I have been fighting a lot of fatigue and I don't think it is MS related but I don't know what else it could be so any comments are greatly appreciated.

All of my blood work the last few months have been normal and because both incidents have happened on a weekend I haven't been to see a doctor yet.

Thanks!
Corrie

Thanks everyone! No thyroid, diabetes or blood pressure issues thankfully. :-)

Lisa, I'm intrigued because I sleep on my right side and it is my left eye that swells.

Maureen, good luck with your appointment!

Mike, I hope everything goes well for you.

Pastor Dan, I am a faithful hot compress in the morning kind of girl, it helps my eyes from getting dry.

Thanks again!

There are many causes of periorbital edema and in some instances, there is idiopathic periorbital angioedema (swelling of eyes).

In your case, you're having unilateral swelling of the upper eyelid.  If you had rhinitis then most likely that would be the cause, but you're stating that its the upper eyelid and it doesnt last longer than 24 hours.

I too, once in awhile get bilateral periorbital edema or angioedema. I'm unsure which one it is.  I look like a person with nephrotic syndrome. LOL.  But like you, it does go away.  The bridge of my nose, the upper and lower lids are swollen as well as the corners of my eyes.  When this happens (which it is rare), I also notice a sunburn look across my cheeks and bridge of nose. I'm unsure if its the dilation of capillaries that is causing that "pinkish" look or not.

Do yo have a thyroid disorder? Have you recently been checked for hypo/hyperthyroid?  I was just curious.  How about hypertension? If so, have you had it for a long length of time? Sometimes with hypertension, it can cause your kidneys to have a change in their function, giving rise to having  some renal (kidney) insufficiency where intermittent swelling can be noticeable.

I'm not saying you have that, I'm just throwing ideas around.

I never had mine looked at when it was happening, but I did take photographs with my cell phone when it did.  My face is so distorted and lopsided its not funny.

Sometimes I wonder if its positional when we are sleeping because when I find this, its normally in the morning upon wakening and my left side (the side I sleep on) is the side that's more swollen than the other.

I'd use your cell phone too and take pictures of it when it happens and the next time you see your MD you can ask hey...what the heck is this?  Remember to make note on the days that this happens (whenever it does) if you have an upper respiratory infection/rhinitis.  Or any other symptom that may be pertinent while this is happening.

I hope I helped some....

My wife noticed swelling in one of my eyelids a few days ago. To be honest I didn't even notice and I forgot to look in the mirror when I had the chance.  Hmmm.....no idea if this would be MS related or not

My ophthalmologist suggested hot washcloth folded over the eyes.  Thqt wasn't for swelling, though.  I wonder if a blocked tear duct might be involved.

Hi,
I have issues with eyes swelling.  Both my eyes.  My right eye now has a permanent slight droop.  My neuro says that it could be MS related.  But no one seems to know what to do.  He has actually seen my eyes swell.  They swell randomly and then go back down.  They have swelled so much that they have left deep creases in my forehead and make me look like I have a black eye in the corner.  I have an appointment in 2 days at a large hospital that specializes in eyes.  I am anxious to see what they say.
I have been tested for every thing you can think of.

Thanks Poppy! I forgot to mention that i tried allergy pills, Nasonex, and allergy eye drops. The first in incident I only used the drops so the second time around I went at it with everything and it didn't heal any faster that time.

The odd thing I noticed was usually the OTC eye drops usually sting a lot when I have had eye allergies before and there was none of that during these instances.

Cold compresses didn't seem to do much either.

Hi Corrie

Have you tried using an anti-histamine to see whether that helps?  If it does, it would perhaps suggest it's a reaction to some form of allergen???

Best wishes
