What are possible outcomes of radiation induced cronic gleotic change?

I had a brain tumor removed in 1990 and radiation treatment/proton beam therapy right after.  An MRI in 2013 showed “cronic gleotic change”.  Could this cause symptoms of MS or cause MS?

Hi and welcome,

You don't mention if you have been diagnosed with MS or not, i'm making an assumption that your not dx because part of your question entails if it could cause MS symptoms......technically brain surgery to remove a brain tumor and or radiation therapy is trauma to the brain, and trauma causes gliosis changes so i wouldn't think it's far fetched to be wondering if its connect to your prior brain trauma.

The types of symptoms your experiencing would need to be associated with the specific location that the removal of the brain tumor and radiation occurred for it to be a likely causation of symptoms.....

"The onset of gliosis can be either beneficial or detrimental to the central nervous system.  The gliosis helps the surrounding healthy cells from further harm or damage.  This is achieved by containing the damaged and unhealthy neurons.  The protection of the healthy cells from the results of cell death and inflammation is the beneficial part of the gliosis.  On the other hand, the onset of gliosis is detrimental in part when the scarring continues subsequently leading to an irreversible damage or permanent damage to the neurons.  The continuous scarring can also prevent the surrounding neurons from recovering completely."

There's a 23 year gap from when you had the brain surgery and radiation and the MRI that shows “cronic gleotic change” i honestly don't know much about brain tumors or gleotic changes developed time frames but i would of thought within that time frame for the tumor and radiation to be the most likely causation something would of turned up at lot sooner, did any of your other MRI's show anything?

Hope that helps.......JJ

Thank you!  No, nothing of note had shown up on any prior MRIs.  I’d had clivus chordoma and the neuro surgeon didn’t get all of the tumor, but filled the ‘hole’ left with tissue from my leg because of  the resection of the tumor.  I’d had radiation and proton beam therapy to kill any of the tumor left behind.
P.S. I haven’t been diagnosed with MS
