dizzy, drunk feeling when waking up....

Does anyone feel drunk...dizzy..out of whack  when they first get up in the morning?

I have this feeling when I first get up in the morning ..I have to take my time getting up because I feel like I am going to fall right down.

it feels like I have been drinking all day and night...Thank god it seems to get better as the day goes on.

I also get this buzzing through my whole body..I think they call them internal vibrations  I take 900mg of gabapentin for this  but it does not seem to be working..anyone  have these vibrations?? what do you take to calm them down???

Thanks Linda

I’ve been observing this page,I have been experiencing so many symptoms, some very embarrassing. My headaches and dizziness finally took me to the ER. I had an MRI done and there are a few tiny Foci in my frontal lobe. I’m going to see a neurologist next week and I’m so afraid that he will say that it’s nothing and send me on my way. What should I do if that happens?

when i wake up, it takes about an hour but my symptoms are anxiety, slurred speech, motor skills off trouble walking. as the day progresses i get better. i think it has a lot to do with high cortisol in the morning. i have been battling it for years! and have trouble holding a job.

Had MS since 96 and dizziness was my first symptom. Still dizzy but now feeling woozy off balance and having internal tremors. If anyone knows of something to take to stop this please let me know.

Hey there, I'm having the same symptoms in my dreams. I can go to bed just fine yet my dream state is so twisted, distorted, dizzy and "drunken" that I wake up with severe headaches. I literally feel drunk throughout the dream to the point I have to think if I really did drink at all. The first time it happened, I woke out of my sleep extremely hot (sweating) and on the verge of vomiting. I thought perhaps I was just getting ill. But then it went away. It started every once in a while but has began to occur more frequently (at least 3x a week) and leaving the symptoms to last most of the next day. I feel drugged or hungover. Other than propping your head up, is there anything else you've found to help?

Bugger! (ozzie slang) I wrote a post late last night and instead of posting i think i sent if off into cyberland, just adjacent to odd sock land lol!

You all had me thinking, I am in constant tremor and have been for over a year, i am never still and i've thought about my different tremors a lot, trying to work it out so I can accept it. What if (bare with me here lol) the reason it feels different when we wake, is cognition?

The brains been in voluntary hibernation (sleep) so without awareness of ones self in any form, maybe waking is like turning on the wonkie engine, a start up rev per say. Once your fully compos mentis and the brain is aware of all the other things (standing, breathing, hearing etc) there is enough automatic distractions to make it feel like its settled down. Its still there but not standing alone, feeling less so the more aware and awake we become.

This theory on mine lol might have a ring of truth in it, I do know that when i'm having a really shaky day, i am less able to control it and it feels closer to how i feel when i wake up, it just doesn't settle enough. Just another in a long line of what is its lol!

Cheers........JJ

Hey, all

Just thought I'd mention that I felt so whacked out this morning while driving to work that I could not remember how to turn on cruise control! I use it every day driving to work and for more than a half an hour, I could not remember.

Love those brain fog days. No wonder I don't want to drive for 45 minutes at highway speed.

Linda:

Sounds like a big club here. I wake up dizzy and in a fog and it takes me much longer to wake up in the morning. I was prescribed antivert, but that did not work, so I am on clonazepam (stronger and a longer lasting med). I do not have a drunken feeling, but it does take me at least 2 to 4 hours to feel halfway normal (whatever that is anymore).

Valium, antivert and clonazepam are all part of the benzodiazepine class. If taken daily for more than 3 weeks, the withdrawal can be wicked, so if you start don't skip doses. While addictive, the good news is that the body does not need increased dosage levels and for some, the benefits outweigh the cons.

If sleeping slightly elevated does help to lessen the dizziness, this may be suggestive of a vestibular problem. You might want to consider seeing an ENT for an evaluation.

Hi Linda

Just to say that I always feel slightly "out of it" first thing in the morning and have put this down to meds. I normally find that a cup of tea does the trick and just allowing myself time to wake up properly. If I have to get up for anyhting early such as an appointment or seeing a client I make sure that I give myself longer to get up than normal.

I also have the vibrations (mainly on one side) and they are always there and a daily reminder of when my next dose of Gabapentin is due. I am now on 1200 mg a day which seems to have helped things. I am guessing they are here to stay and the Beach Boy song comes to mind "Good, good, good, good vibrations". They obviously had something different in mind!

I think that it is a long learning curve understanding what we experience and feel in our bodies but it helps being able to talk to others when something new crops up.

Thank you everyone.... I am going to try sleeping with my head propped up....and just taking my time getting out of bed... I dont see my doctor till october...I will mention it to him then.

JJ ....     yes total body vibration really is what it feels like......... I have it all of the time...

some times it is  worse than others ..just like you describe. This was one of my first symptoms that kept me going back to the doctors before I was diagnosed because it was always there.

I had the eye lid twitch..or tremor..for months..then it just stopped! :)  maybe the whole body tremor will just stop too ( I wish)....I have had this for 3 years now..it makes me crazy!!  when I mention it to the doctor he keeps raising the gabepentin..it works for a little while...then its back...ughhhh

Paula........  I will ask my doctor about  antivert  ....Thanks

I agree being distracted does help...and knowing that Im not alone in this..Thanks everyone!!  :)

I'm starting my "hippotherapy" next week - horse riding that is. Supposed to help us dizzy off balance types.

Frankly I don't care if it helps or not, I just cant WAIT to ride the horses again.

But I'll let you know if it has a beneficial effect on my balance and if it is worth consideration for others, because the claim is that it does....help balance....apparently.

I totally wish that my dizziness/off-balance trouble only lasted in the morning. I haven't walked straight since 2008. Nothing worked for me. I go to PT to do Vestibular therapy. I have a vibrating left heel once in a while.

I hope you get a dx soon if you don't already have one.

Hugs,
Kristi

I find that I get the buzzing feeling the most when i lay down to go to bed. I also get the woozy drunk feeling and I cant stand it. I actually get it when Im sleeping, I learned how to cope with this because I get so dizzy at nights that my dreams actually turn upside down and when that happens Im able to get myself awake before getting really sick. If i dont catch it then ive gotten so dizzy i have to stay in bed because i cant even walk. Its horrible..scared me half to death when it first happened.

What I found helps for the dizzy feelings is sleeping with my head propped up. Dont know why, it doesnt take it all away, but just enough to be funcitonal.

Hey Linda,

Well the timing of the question is impeccable, I too have a similar question that may or may not be related but i think it probably is connected. I think i first mentioned my 'internal tremor' or as your calling it internal vibration (total body vibration), to my GP about 4 years ago now, got no explanation that makes sense in light of everything else i'm now dealing with.

This feeling of being in tremor is at its worst when i first wake up, be it middle of the night, normal morning or after my daily nap, every day it's 'always' exactly the same though over time it is more than it was. When it started it would hang around for a week or 2 then go away again, it came in April 09 and I think its here for good.

I have played around with this, trying to work out whats best for me (lol) If i wake and get straight up then i'm more likely to walk like a drunk, staggering around until it settles or my brain starts firing on the remaining cylinders. Now when I wake up, I tend to stay put with my eyes closed, still relaxed and waiting it out, it seems to give me a steadier walk.

What i've been thinking maybe connected is my eye wobbles, i've wondered for a while now if i have eyeball tremors as well as eyelid tremors. For a long while i haven't been able to close my eyes without the eyelid tremors, they do not stop, I can get them to reduce in velocity by looking down to the left, if I look to the right it gets worse, the left seems to be the slow down button in my brain. I still can't close my eyes standing up, i always go backwards though i havent a clue if my eyelids are in tremor, its so quick and I have a pannicky/startled feeling.

With my usual playing around i've worked out that when i wake, my eyeballs feel like they are doing a rappid vibrating tremor. I've caught it looking in a mirror but its hard to see and it doesn't last long, the interesting bit is it lasts as long as the internal tremor does.

Does any of that make any sense to what your experiencing?

Cheers........JJ

I have the same problem. Sometimes I will litterally bounce off my walls when I walk down the hallway.

My doctor put me on antivert, which helps to a point, makes it less but doesn't take it away completely.

I also have a cane handy just in case, I haven't used it yet, but now when I go shopping I take a shopping cart and lean on it cause my leg gives out.

Good luck

I get that in the morning and at night!  Like right now, I feel like the room is spinning.  It takes me up to 45 minutes to actually get out of bed in the morning.  I usually wake up and lay there with my eyes closed for a few, then open them, then close them and so on until I can sit up and so on.  At night, I have to sit down most of the time, lean on walls when I walk and constantly feel like I am going to vomit.

If I close my eyes I can not stand still, I wobble and almost fall down, it is absolutely NUTS!!

I have an appointment coming up in 8 days and I am hoping that this process can be somewhat a fairly quick one, but I am not counting on it.  I am hoping my neurologist will treat some of the more painful and symptoms that make it harder to function on a normal daily basis until I can be diagnosed.

Good luck to everyone with their dx, sx and so on.

I do this daily. My doc put me on valium daily for this. Believe or not it works once you get used to it. without it I have to use a cane with it I can manage wall walking alot. I also dont feel my left foot in the mornings which makes it even more difficult.

One of the docs I work with tells me there are not enough rivers in the state to send me to. ( the state mental facilities are called twin rivers and three rivers) LOL

I wake up with the room spinning every morning.  I walk like I'm drunk sometimes.  I think both are very common MS things.

Hi,

I get similar frequently, not as soon as I get up, but within 10 minutes to an hour of getting out of bed. I absolutely HATE it!

Oh, I don't get the buzzing, but definately the woozy drunk dizzy unbalanced thing. Yesterday i ahd it pretty bad and my son went WOW as I swayed like a tripping hippy.....

I used to panic because I didn't know what was going on (I still don't actually know now, WHY this occurs when I get up and not while in bed)
Since being diagnosed I am panicking less often..

Funnily enough I find sitting at the computer, being distracted by stressless things like facebook and this forum and a cup of tea with 3 sugars (yes 3) , a couple of paracetamol tablets, and attempting to relax until it passes helps.
