phone + myoclonic jerks = twilight zone

Hey guys and dolls,

This maybe a new one for the books, dont know i dont think i've ever seen this one discussed before, but hopefully it will make sense to someone.

Picture this, i'm laying in bed, nice a comfy slightly propped up with pillows, chocy in hand, not sleeping or even trying to sleep, i'm simply escaping kids tv to watch a chick flick, ohhh the indulgence of chocy and a chick flick, bliss! The phone rings, i look over to see if the hand set is in easy reach and its not in sight, oh well i'm thinking someone else will get it, then the second ring erupts. Now what happened next was totally twilight zone stuff. With each ring, my lower body jerked, thats full twists and body bouncing jerks with each eruption of sound coming out of the phone. I'm not sure where my chocy ended up lol!

I was tingly afterwards and wondering what the heck did that mean, seriously am i going to turn into a pretzle everytime the phone rings, no fair! I'd already been getting my auditory imput screwed up, eg I thought hubby said something about a recorder but he had actually said woodglue, now the similarities are very clear, as MUD! I've been cracking up from my own screw ups all week, but the last few days have been over the top HILARIOUS.

Youngest (13) whilst doing math, compound interest to be precise says "Mum why is the vigeeeeeena a hot bed of both good and bad bacteria?" I say i'm not good at explaining interest so ask your dad when he comes home, son's face was a bit confused. 5 hours later, I suddenly work out what a vigeeeeeeeena is, i was laughing so hard when the penny dropped that I thought i was going to throw up, dh thought id finally lost the plot, hmmmm maybe i have ROFL.

I know my startle reflex is off, has been for a while but this sound activated jerk was a bit wild and so not like a startle activated reflex. One of my last posts was about myoclonic jerks and maybe this is part of it, so anybody else living in the twilight zone?

Cheers..........JJ

ROFL i'll just go visit my in the flesh doc, and say "I was dx with reticular reflex myoclonus by Jen over the internet so can you add the dx to my medical records" LOL!

Oops probably shouldn't laugh, I know someone who actually did do something like that, thankfully i'm not that silly.

These big jerks I have (what ever they are called) are so far still sparodic, not regular or predictable so i'm not fussed about them. The startle reflex thingy, is going off more than usual, a bit annoying on top of the tremors but i've been worse so its all good!

Cheers.......JJ

Yerrsshh... yes, possibly.  Don't let me diagnose you!  Talk to your doc about these symptoms, and don't mention that you think it's reticular reflex myoclonus.

I'm having trouble working out what your saying, its just my brain fuddled (lol I need another coffee), its not you!

So are you saying that having all 3 (startle, thumping, jerks) = reticular reflex myoclonus?

I think that it's actually the movement of your soft palate.  When it tenses, the sound is transferred to your eardrum, and what you get is this thumping whooshing sound, like you describe.

Evidently reticular reflex myoclonus has the exaggerated startle reflex, palatal myoclonus (the thumping in your ears) and the myoclonic jerks, usually brought on by some sort of external stimulus.

I do actually.

Its sort of a WARR-roomp, WARR-roomp, WARR-roomp rhythmic sound, you could say thumping but i was thinking it reminds me of the ultrasound sounds. I really couldn't say if its happening when i'm jerking, i'm seriously only aware of the jerks. The jerks are a bit shocking in there hardness and intensity, not really any time to think or be aware of anything else.

The sound doesn't hurt, not piercing like tinnitus but when it is there its quite loud and usually gets my attention. Since they found the blood rush thing in my neck, i was thinking it was just that. I'll try and see if its there next time i'm being a jerk!

Reticular reflex myoclonus is what I thought I had for a while!  Now I'm not so sure, after talking to my neuro.  I definitely have the exaggerated startle reflex, although it never set off the myoclonus.

Do you have the thumping in the eardrum?  Evidently that's another form of myoclonus.

Bummer, i found my chocy, the 10 second rule so its too late and the fluff isn't all that appealing, must remember to vacumm :-o

Well i've been visiting the site Jen gave me : we move and whilst reading about myoclonus i came across this ......."Reflex myoclonus may occur in response to certain sounds or words or to weakness and fatigue. Hyperexplexia, which is an exaggerated startle reflex, may occur for no known reason or it may have a genetic basis. The jerks of reflex myoclonus may be focal or generalized."

During dinner i was talking to dh about my startle reflex and these jerks i'm getting (jerks probably are myoclonus because i'm usually awake) we were talking about if it was posible to have a combind thing going on or if it was posible to have the startle reaction with out being startled and apparently you can so maybe i'm not so weird, after all it has a name. I'll try and remember to bring it up with my doc.

I knew you'd have a laugh, gosh i'm laughing all the time at the moment, mainly due to my own suff ups. I'm becoming convinced my central auditory processing unit and language centre is fried, you should hear the things that are coming out of my mouth. A talk-a-holic who can't talk! Grrrrr my pronunciation is way off because of my tongue being lazy, locating words is bad enough but some of the words i'm coming up with are not even words! lol

Hey Addi, um I tried the 'can you feel this too trick', scared the begebers out of dh. The spasm hit his hand so hard, he jumped, it reminded him of when i was pregnant. lol gord it was funny to see him jump and it was only one of my intercostal muscles going off, more and he'd think i was octo-mum. I think the little ones are really weird cause only you can feel them, the big ones and not only can others feel them, they can see them too. Slippery little s-u-ck-ers!

Laugh and the world laughs with you!

Cheers.........JJ

Haha, JJ!  I gotta go with a funny response because I can so relate to what happened with you!!   So first off, can I have the number to your doc?  Because I want some of what you have!  Or maybe it was the chocy!

Okay, okay I will try to behave now.  ;)   I don't know of any advise to give you on this, mum.  Who knows, maybe this really is a common thing?  Especially with your startle reflex?

I have a story of my own in the twilight zone.  Shhh, don't tell anyone though, ok?

I sleep in a hospital bed now.  It has the metal guard rails.  I have noticed that when I rub my hand or fingers on one of the rails, I feel a little electric current run through it.  If I grab onto it to use it, it doesn't happen.  Only with the slight touch and only if I run my hand across it.  It doesn't hurt.  Okay, kinda weird.  I don't tell anyone about this.

Until it really starts bugging me.  Lol. Then I hafta open my big mouth.  I tell my teenaged daughter.  Big mistake!   I don't actually just tell her...I ask her to rub her hand lightly on it.  She gives me a strange look but gives in and does it.  She feels nothing.  Hmmm.  I do it and it still vibrates/shocks me.   So i have her do it again.  Nothing.  I am like WTF??

Now, my daughter finds this HIGHLY amusing.  Great!  Lol.  For the next several weeks I continue to feel this shocky thing and I have to live with my daughter pokin' fun at me.

Then one evening, I am laying in my bed, minding my own business, watching tv.  I have been experiencing vibrations in my chest area for the last 8-9 months now.  I am wondering if this has anything to do with the shocky thing I am feeling on my bed.  This night the vibrations in my chest were really strong.  And what do I do?   I open my big mouth again to my daughter.  I call her into my room and ask her to put her hand on my chest.  :/    I honestly thought (just for a second!) that she would be able to feel it.  She does it, I think just to amuse me or to have more ammo to poke fun at me!

Well, I gave her more ammo because she didn't feel a thing!  Lol. Funny thing though...my bed is not giving me the shocky thing since then.

So, gf...I will step into the twilight zone with you!  Now, can you share some of that chocy with me?  I will watch the chick-flick with you!

Hugs,
Addi

Forgive me if I am not being very sympathetic, but I know you have a sense of humour and I confess your post had me chuckling, particularly when it came to the compund interest story.

I have never read or heard of anyone else having this noise induced myconic type jerk and just hope that the choccie was not wasted or is found at a later date melted in the sheets!

On a more serious note I think it would be worth mentioning to your neuro for his/her interest as much as anything next time you see him/her. (I was going to just write "his" and realised that this is because I never seem to hear about female neuros..but perhaps someone else can set me straight here!)

Anyhow hope the chick flick was enjoyable, the choccie was rescued and your son has a good biology teacher!!

Love and thanks for making me smile, "Supermum"
