prozac

Good morning to everyone. I was wondering if any one has heard about the short trial  done for prozac in ms . My gp has told me about it and apparently the ms society have shown interest more trials are due to take place?. Just looking for feed back only after being on rebif then beterferon which was a bad time for me so i came of them although they work for others thank god they were not for me unfortunately.

Hope to hear any news on this topic from any one who has any information. So sorry only just started to come back on forum but have had rough time as we all do i know from time to time.

Hoping today is a good day for all

hugs to all jules

Prozac now stand along with two other odd-seeming drugs in showing (over a relatively short time) to reduce either lesions and/or relapses.  The other two are minocycline ( a tetracycline antibiotic) and Lipitor or Zocor the statin med for high cholesterol.

It seems that a lot of meds have an antiinflammatory action.  We need to see longterm studies on these.

With all of the knowleadge being gained about direct axonal degeneration being more directly linked to the disability in MS (than demyelinization) and NOT being linked to the inflammatory part, it will be interesting to see if these drugs show a slowing of the disability in MS.

Hi!  Welcome back!  Good to see you!

Very interesting, indeed.  The Netherlands study hardly seems scientific with such a small sampling of subjects, but perhaps this will spur further study.  (Thanks for looking it up, Elaine!)  Those SSRIs are miracle drugs, if you ask me!  I couldn't have gotten through my post-partum days without Prozac.....

Let us know if you hear anything more!

Yes, I did find the study about Prozac and MS!!!!   It was done in the Netherlands.  38 people completed the study.  They took 20 mg of Prozac each day.   Two thirds of the group on Prozac had NO new areas of inflammation while on the drug.   25 percent of the group on the placebo had new lesions.

Detailed brain scans were done every four weeks.  Now researchers want to further investigate the effect of higher doses of Prozac.

Thanks Jules for bringing this to the forum!!!

So glad to see you posting.  Everybody needs some time away from the Forum due to illness and just plain fatigue.  We understand.

I have not heard about the study with Prozac.  I wonder if I can find some information out on the MS Society website.  If anyone else knows about the study, we would love to know about it.  Zocor (the cholesterol lowering drug) was said to be a benefit to MS'ers, but I don't think that therory ever panned out.

Good to see you Meathead...how have you been doing sweetheart?

Big Hugs,
Heather
