ADULTS BORN PREMATURE

MY MOTHER (AGE 84) WAS BORN PREMATURE. SHE CLAIMS SHE COULD FIT IN A CIGAR BOX.  AS AN
ADULT SHE IS MOSTLY FUNCTIONAL BUT HAS LITTLE OR NO ABILITY TO FORM ATTACHMENTS,NURTURE,OR
EMPATHIZE.  SHE CAN TALK INCESSANTLY BUT CANNOT LISTEN. SHE RARELY MAKES EYE CONTACT AND
HAS DIFFICULTY MAKING DECISIONS. COULD THIS BE RELATED TO BEING PREMATURE?  THANK YOU

Extreme prematurity or extremely low birthweight increases the risk of neurodevelopmental problems.  This does not mean that all extremely premature infants will develop problems, but that their chances for doing so are higher than the population of term, normal birthweight infants.

I do not, however, think there is any way of knowing whether being premature is a contributing factor in your mother's current health or behavior.
