49 yr old female with gait problems

I am 49 yrs old, fairly healthy but I seem to have problems with my gait. Sometimes, when I have been sitting, and I get up to walk, my legs just don't want to work and my gait is very jerky. If it is cold outside, the symptoms are much more pronounced. I have found that I can't run anymore without risking a fall. When I walk fast, I tend to always end up on my toes which makes me more unsteady. My mother died from complications from early onset Alzheimers and I am attuned to the possibility that it may be familial so this concerns me as an early symptom. I wonder if there are exercises to help balance and gait. Should I see a neurologist or is this a job for my internist?

I  would definitely see a neurologist  and him/her do a MRI.  I has MS and I have many of the same symptoms as  you.  I am 48 years old and have has MS for 22 years.  Whatever the outcome, I wish you all the best and  good health.
