"Aura" before a seizure...

Ok...how to make this short...
For the past 10 years, I have been getting "spells" that are hard to explain.  I get a strange feeling, like deja vous (sp?), but not just like "wow, familiar", more like "WOW - I HAVE BEEN HERE".  The feeling lasts 5-10 minutes, I have total conciousness, and can function just fine.  As soon as the feeling is over, I get nauseous, and have vomited before.  Occassionally, I will loose control of my left arm and leg...where it's moving just slightly, but beyond my control (if I'm holding something, I'll drop it).  I still have not any type of answer as to what is going on...have been to many doctors over the years.  I've been prescribed Topomax and Lamictal in the past, and nothing has helped.  I'll have spurts of these for a few days, then be fine for a month or so, and then they will come back.  I have been told I'm having mild seziures and strokes...but no real answers.  I'm hoping someone here maybe has some experience with this.  It's a horrible feeling, and I'd at least like something to control it.  Thank you!

Thank you so much....I got bumped up, and saw the neurologist yesterday. He looked at my past films, and most recent, and I'm being sent to Stanford next week!  Finally a new "step".  I'm set up for a new MRI on Thursday, and an EEG on Friday.  I'm going to ask about the Carbitrol.  Thank you so much!

i have similar seizures, that is definitely what you are having. i take carbitrol and it really helps. they tried me on lamictal and it gave me aweful nightmares. your doctors suck. i never dropped anything or had strange body movements. it took me 5 years o get someoneto listen to me. the de a vu part of your seizure is seizure actiity, not just an aura. i had a normal MRI and an abnormal EEG. you need to have a video EEG in the WORST WAY! go to an epileptologist. i vented to mine about how long it took me to get a diagnosis even after i'd told many doctors.. he said "well if all you have in your toolbox is a screwdriver..." look up 'temporal lobe seizures and de ja vu' on the internet. if you have a seizure while you're having your video eeg, they will be able to tell you where the seizure is coming from. then, your treatment options will increase. you could be a candidate for surgery. all seizures have the potential to get worse. you must get control of this. you're having more than just mild seizures. those 2 words don't even sound right together.. 'oh, your brain is missfireing, only mildly though'. and STROKES at 27 years old. can't wait to hear hat neurologist #7 has to say about all of this. you better post.

I did have an EEG, and it comes up normal.  However, on my MRIs, I do have two masses - cystic tumors (?) that I'm told shouldn't be causing anything...even though one presses on my brain stem.  I have an appointment with new neurologist #7 this week!!!  Thanks!

Sounds like your diagnosis is a good possibility.  Did the docs do EEG and other electrical tests and diagnostic films including MRIs and function studies on you?  There are various types of medications for particular seizures.  I would continue to seek a "good" neurologist.  Sorry I cannot help you more.  Be safe and God bless.
