Dear Div:

Axonal neuropathy is a symptom not a disease per se.  Whether one can treat an axonal neuropathy depends on what is the etiology of the axonal loss.  If it is alcoholism then treating the alcohol problem can help slow the disease.  If it it genetic, such as hereditary senory motor neuropathy, then there is little that can be done.  For instance, if the axonal neuropathy is due to myeloma, then treating the myeloma problem will help with the neuopathy.

So, depending on what the etiology is will determine both the outcome and the treatment possibilities.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD

I will start from the beginning basically...I had a major fall down my mom and dad's steps when I was in my early teens because of my shoestring being untied, didn't know it..... Had several falls on ice over the years...when I was pregnant with both my boths had problems with my hips hurting me and went into false labor several times... in 5 auto accidents since 1987, done heavy lifting at my jobs since I was 17..I ended up having a fall landing on my taibone and lower back in 91 or 92 climbing over a hourse fence, it gave way.. I was very dumb..L.O.L.
I have hip and lower back pain since the fall in 91 or 92, had a terrible time getting off the ground but did... I thought nothing was broke... Wrong, I found out here in 96, that I broke my L-4 par on the left side....
I also had a back surgery in 95 for dic herniation.. my doctor had me do the surgery right away because it was causing paralsysis in my legs...We thought the surgery fixed it but after 8 days later my lower back started hurting, and yes I was doing some lifting since I am single parent, had no choice...
had several MRI's, XRAYS, MYELOGRAMS, CT SCANS.. Nothing is showing up.. My orthopedic DR. wanted to do another surgery because my L3-4 is bulging.. went to Iowa city, seen a specialist, said no surgery...It would do more harm, it would not fix the problem but yet he didn't know what the problem was... So I went to Peoria, IL. to see a specialist there, he said the same thing.. I even went to a chiropractor, he said the samething.. So I went back to my Dr. that wanted to do another back surgery and he snapped at me because I went for some oppinions, refused to treat me after that this was in 96....
I didn't have a dr. for a year and a half..
I went to a neurologist in Peoria from a referral by my general physician..Dr.RICHARD LEE because of numbness in my legs, very weak when I walk, very painful at times.. He ran an EMG and found out it is not caused by my back... The left peronial nerve showed a distal latency of 4.0 milliseconds, and a conduction velosity of 52.8 meters pr second, Amplitude and duration were unremarkable. The f-wave was 47.8 milliseconds. The posterior tibial on the left showed a distal latency of 5.7 milliseconds and a conduction velosity of 61.4 meters pr second. Amp and duration were unremark. The f-wave was 52.0 Femoral latency on the left was 3. The right peronael nerve showed a distal latency of 4.58 and conduction velosity of 56.6 meters pr second. Amp. and duration were unremark. The f-wave was 45.7 milliseconds. The posterier tibial nerve on the right showed a distal latency of 5.14 milliseconds and a conduction velosity of 54.2 meters pr second. The f-wave was 52.2 milliseconds. Sensory latencies were attempted on the left at 7, 14, 21 centimeters. There was no recordable response at any level. On the right the sensory latencies were also attempted at 7 centimeters there a very poor response at 3.1 milliseconds. The 14 and 21 centimeter attempts showed no recordable response. The reflax was 14.9 on the left and 14.5 on the right..Impressions: Midly abnormal EMG and nerve conduction velosity study of the lower extremities. This study shows evidence of a diffuse sensry neuropathy w/out evidence of significant motor involvement and no clear evidence of a radicular or myopathic component. He incouraged me to have a biopsy done on my left lower leg...So I had one done in 6-9--2000
and the results are left sural nerve, biopsy: Peripheral nerve showing mild loss of myelinated fibers w/ axonal degeneration, consistent with axonal neuropathy...Dr. Lee also had me on NERONTIN 500 mg, had to quit taking that it made me crave sweets really bad.. He has me on Amytriptyline 5o mg so I can sleep at night..The neurologist here in town wants me to have a CT SCAN done of my female organs to see if it maybe causing it. Also he wants to have a test done that Dr. Lee didn't do for cancer..Now DR. LEE orderd some blood tests for my vitamin defic. as well as had some blood sent to Athena Diagnostics, INC. for Co-Sensorimotor neuropathy profile, the results came back ok.Also Galop Autoantibody Test, the test came back ok. Also Neuropathy Profile and it came back ok.Dr. Katchen is asking a test to be done at the ATHENA DIAGNOSTICS, INC a Paraneoplasia- now is that for cancer.. It is starting to feel like I am getting a run around again, not getting very clear answers.. I am hoping you can give some imput on what might be going on.. I am Fatigued, tierd, weak in the legs, lower back pain, hip pain.. I have also been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my lower back as well osteoporosis in my back, scoliosis in my spine, sclorosis in my hip joints, if that is not enough.. I also have shooting pains in my feet, my legs go to sleep(lower half)especially if I cross my legs..Sometimes I cut myself in the leg or foot and not feel it, also I bruise myself in my legs and not know it.When it comes to cold weather my lower legs very seldom get cold, I can;t feel it..My arms are now having problems, they go to sleep on me, I was diagnosed with tennis elbow..I drop things because I can't feel I have a hold of it, I can crush a can because it feels like I don't have a good grip and it falls out of my hands anyway especially when my fingers or hand twitches..My hands and body(upper half) get very cold here lately...it may not be related..
I hope I can get your imput on this very soon.. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR READING THIS...
I don't feel hungry on some days, other days I can't eat enough..
