Burning Sensation

.Hello,

I am an otherwise healthy 39-year old male I would say, a bit of a hypochondriac I would say, hence this post …Back in 2004 I had surgery for appendicitis and after my surgery the strangest thing happened….The center-outer part of my left thigh started burning.  On the surface that is…Although there was no redness or swelling etc, it felt like I needed an icepack on my thigh just to prevent spontaneous combustion of my leg…Anyway, as time went on that bizarre sensation went away thankfully, and I chalked it up to the oddities of post surgical recovery….Here we are in 2011 and guess what?? My left thigh is on fire again….If I even brush up against it the wrong way it hurts….Again the discomfort is not deep in the leg, it is topical….When I go to bed I have to but a darn ice pack just to mitigate the sensation….Any ideas?  Thank you for your time

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there. These symptoms are suggestive of meralgia paraesthetica, which is numbness or pain in the outer thigh not due to any injury but due to injury to the nerve extending from thigh to spinal column. This disorder usually involves lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh. You would require an electromyogram to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment would include weight loss if obese, loose clothing, NSAIDs, pain modifying drugs for neuropathic pain. Consult with a neurologist at the earliest. Hope this helps. Take care.
