Can Doxycycline cause kidney stones?

My husband was prescribed Doxycycline for a skin infection. He also suffers hypertension and takes Benicar for years. He is physically fit otherwise. Recently, he had to go to the ER because a severe pain that turn up to be passing of a kidney stone, and two more one in each kidney that eventually will come down. He eats healthy and drinks plenty of fluids. The only new medication is Doxycycline. He has stopped taking it because it seems to be the culprit.

This discussion is related to Doxycycline Headache.

Hi!
I am sorry to hear about your husband’s medical problems. Actually Benicar causes hyper uricemia (increased uric acid in blood). This can cause stone formation in kidney. It may take years for the stones to form. Please get his serum uric acid tested. Doxycycline is unlikely to be the cause of stone formation.
Take care!
