Drop foot

I had surgery about 15 years ago for a prolapsed disc,I completely damaged my sciatic nerve. I have had a drop foot ever since. Does anyone know if there have been any new ideas on how to help this.

Yes there are new treatments! At Washington University in St. Louis they are doing "nerve transfer" surgery, where they take nerves from another part of your body and put it onto the ankle. There is also FES Functional Electric Stimulation, an anklet device you where to stimulate the muscles so you can walk. It is about $6700 but maybe your insurance will cover it. You get started with it from a physical therapy place and then if it works you can order one. Best of luck to you...I'm in the same situation.

Hi,
It is really unfortunate that there was a damage of the Sciatic nerve during surgery.
In cases of severe injury to the nerve, such as laceration, recovery may be not possible or may be limited. However you must take physiotherapy and good nutritious diet rich in multivitamins, multiminerals, Calcium and Omega 3 fatty acids. Capsule Renerve may also help in improvement of symptoms to some extent. Please consult a neurologist and physiotherapist for the management plan. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!

this is in regards to your foot drop.I am not a Dr. but, I recently had a craniotomy which effected the  left leg leading to a foot drop. i have asked on this site for help aswell, with no responce. But at the moment what i am doing is, muscle re education w/ the use of electric stimulation. you can get the stem unit online, BUT u must go to a PT facility so they can show u exactly where to place it on the leg that leads to the foot , you can get hurt real bad if dont use it properly.... I am not a doctor so check first b 4 making any choices.e-mail me if u find any other solutions for us with a foot drop....
have a good day
