EEG

My now 5 yr old had sleep study that indicated it was Abnormal with diffuse cortical/sub-cortical dysfunction involving in particular the left hemisphere.  Clinical Correlation is strongly advised.

I am looking for some english translation and I have also made a much longer post about my child in Special Needs Forum if anyone is interested.

Thank you for any help.

Hello.

It seems that she has caught an infection. Does she have respiratory symptoms ? Ask for her complete blood count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. These two investigations are very important. They can give a hint towards infections.

While you meet the Neurologist, discuss about treatment plan. And please let him know about the fevers, too.

there was an initial spontaneous cry then no respiratory effort. Heart rate initially not detectable & PPV/chest compressions begun.  (see DR note for full details)
Intubated by 2 minutes 45 seconds.  Epi x1 given per ETT due to initial lack of detectable heart rate.  APGARS of 0/3/6/7 at 1/2/10/15 minutes of life.  transported to NICU, intubatred and placed on vent.

there is a Neuro note that reads:
arms/legs flexed, spontaneous movements, appears to be "looking around"

We go to Boston Children's Hospital tomorrow for a neurology appointment.  Is there anything I should ask them that would be of help to us.  We just feel kind of lost as to how to help her.  I have been pretty concerned about her as she has been having fever spikes mostly in evening and at night.  She has had a few bouts of illness since late January other than the fevers to, but the Pedi. said it is just something going around. However having 4 fevers a week, is just too much so I am gonna talk to her Pedi. again tomorrow and insist maybe they see her again.

Thank you,
Francine

Hello.

It is possible that the cerebral dysfunction is due to some ischemic (loss of blood supply) injury to the brain during or immediately after the birth. If there was any complication, like failure to initiate breathing (needed oxygen support ?), the initial injury to the brain can lead to cortical dysplasia ( disturbed structure of the cerebral cortex). This can give rise to certain symptoms like seizures.

She could be having absence seizures. An absence seizure is an episode of brain dysfunction in which the child is "lost" for a few seconds. Things may fall from hands, the child appears to "stare" at a particular direction, but can't communicate. She will probably need a regular EEG monitoring and probably some anti-seizure medication. Absence seizures are known to disappear with increasing age.

Please keep a close watch on her academic progress. She will need continued  special education for some more years.
