The ketogenic diet is basically a special high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that is focused at helping people with epilepsy to control their seizures. The diet is prescribed by a physician, monitored by a dietitian carefully, and is more strict, in terms of calorie, fluid, and protein measurement and restrictions than the modified Atkins diet.
The ketogenic diet is usually prescribed for children who have had poor response to different seizure medications. In some case reports, it has been shown to be effective in some seizure-related conditions such as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, infantile spasms, Rett syndrome, tuberous sclerosis complex, Dravet syndrome, Doose syndrome, and GLUT-1 deficiency. Studies have also reported that over half of children who go on the diet have at least a 50% reduction in the number of their seizures, with some(10-15%) even become seizure-free.
