Left ear pain

My 81-year-old otherwise healthy uncle began to have brief severe sharp pain in the left ear since 1 week ago.  The pain only lasts shortly, rarely closes to 1 minute and shoots to the left side of the head before or over the left ear.  He want to a local ER and the docotr said the ear and every thing were fine.  He does not have other medical problems and still play basket ball daily.  He has no new problems but this pain is very annoying.  He told me that the pain may happen 2-3 times a minute, but he also has pain free intervals for 2-3 hours several times a day.

Pleas tell me what problem my uncle has and what is the treatment.

My daughter has very bad let side ear pain, it started immediatly, she is 6 years old. can you please tell me hat is the reason?

Does/did your uncle have a history of migraines?

He might have a type of headache called "Primary Stabbing Headache"  or more appropriately "Ice-Pick Headaches."  Check out this article and see if it matches your uncle's problem.  If it does then he can speak to his doctor about treatment.  It's miserable, but doesn't indicate anything serious.
