MRI Results for Lower Back

I just received my MRI results and scared I will eventually need surgery.  Are herniated and ruptured discs the same thing.   What does this all mean?!
"At the level of L5-S1, there is a 6mm right paracentral focal disk protrusion, exerting significant mass effect on the traversing right S1 nerve root, causing mild right lateral recess narrowing.  Clinical correlation secondary to right S1 radiculopathy is recommended."

Is this so bad that it will require surgery? Any thoughts? Thanks!
p.s. just turned 40 and in good shape so I am shocked by  this.

I've had 5 back surgeries 3 major and 1 to instal a stim to stop pain due to continued pain and 1 to remove it they put it at wrong spot never helped,I would try to avoid surgery try Faset Blocks or epidural injections 1st.It seems when they cut you once most times you'll be cut again,i;ve had herniations in L5- SI disc 3 times. And thru other tess it's showing a possible another herniation in same disc alot of times it seems to weaken that disc they work on.Jim

Hi, mere MRI findings are not suggestive for surgery, if you can carry your routine work with ease, if pain is bearable; in that case surgery is not indicated or can be postponed.

The symptoms decide whether to go for surgery or not. If you feel, pain killers along with physiotherapy can keep you fit no need to go form surgery.
