Mercury toxicity

Back when I was a kid in the early 1980's my older sister stole a tube of mercury from her high school science lab.  It was a pretty good amount, not the small amount in a thermometer.  I thought it was fascinating and we played with it for hour, rolling in around in our hands and watching it break apart and come together again.  We did this for a few weeks or even months I would say.  I know we did this at the kitchen table or in our bedrooms, didn't wear gloves and didn't wash our hands afterwards.  As I child I had terrible teeth and had all of my teeth filled with metal dental fillings multiple times.  These filling are still in my teeth after all of these years.  I now, at 42, suffer from Fibromialgia, Celiac disease, Asthma, Hashimoto thyroditits, low Vitamin D, Pernicious Anemia, Depression and terrible fatigue.  I had EBV at one time, but the numbers are good now.  This morning half my tooth fell off leaving bad tasting filling where the tooth used to be.  I am going to try and get a dentist apt asap.  I read about mercury toxicity and was wondering if my "playing" with mercury as a kid could have affected my health all of these years. I figured it was out my system in a few months, if it ever was in my system.  After looking online about my bad tasting tooth, I see some say it stays in you unless you chelate the heavy metals out.  Could my lifetime of bad health be from excessive dental work in the 1970's and 80's?  Did I do damage to myself when I played with pure mercury as a kid?  How can I get cured of my autoimmune issues.  I am not a happy or healthy person and I feel like I am living a wasted life.  I can't have kids and sometimes it just does not seem like there is any end in site to my medical issues.  I am taking synthroid and cytomel, prisiq (a new antidepressant) and huge amounts of Vitamin D2.  Does anyone know about this subject?  Is there hope?  What can I do?  I appreciate any help people can give me.

It actually sounds like you are plagued with autoimmune diseases--which unfortunately tend to come in pairs, or triples. So if you have one autoimmune disease, you're very likely to have at least one more crop up at some point. I've been learning this the hard way, as I have allergies, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and recently, am developing anemia.

Celiac disease causes poor vitamin absorption, while hypothyroidism can lead to pernicious anemia, fatigue (both the hypothyroidism and anemia), and depression. It's impossible to "cure" the autoimmune diseases, as medicine has only developed ways to treat the diseases. If you are being treated for the diseases appropriately, though, you shouldn't have too many symptoms on a day-to-day basis. Have you gotten your diseases under control?

It doesn't sound like you have symptoms of mercury poisoning. If you did, you would've exhibited these as a kid after playing with the mercury.

Thanks, that's a relief.  I am looking into natural chelation anyway, it couldn't hurt.  I read your profile.  You sound like me at your age!!  I hope you get your answers soon!  Thyroid problems are a pain in the neck, no pun intended.

I hope I don't develop some more autoimmune diseases, but I feel like there's at least one or two more just waiting to pop up when I least expect it.

A Rheumatologist tested me for a lot of autoimmune diseases and fortunately, I don't have SPRUE, Celiac's, or anything like that. Though I do wonder if that doesn't mean it won't test positive in the future...like thyroid antibodies can do. I don't have the antibodies for Hashimoto's thyroiditis, but my Endocrinologist seems to think that eventually I will. =( Thyroid problems definitely are a pain in the neck! The thyroid effects so many bodily systems that I think it's one of the roughest health issues to deal with, long-term.

Did you figure out what your "tongue appearance" is a result of? I'd be interested to know if it looks similar to mine.....

At your age I didn't even know I had thyroid issues, etc, so you are ahead of the game!  I don't know what is wrong with my tongue, but it seems to look better since I switched tothe gluten free diet. My Dr. told me it means I am not drinking enough water, but I think it's more than that.  Have you been to a nutritionist or been tested for food allergies?

I don't have any problem with gluten because I tested negative for Celiac's. I haven't been tested for food allergies, although I think this would be useful; just environmental allergies (tested positive for severe allergies to grass pollen and dust mites). I've never been a nutritionist, either, though I imagine my mom would LOVE for me to do this.

Thanks for your input!
