Pain after stroke

I suffered a stroke 10/08 on my right side. I am now suffering from swelling in my ankles, my foot and my calf. I expereience pain in my leg and my hand. The both feel like needles shooting down my leg..My leg feels like it weighs a ton and it aches especially at night. I hardly rest. Is this type pain nornal after a stroke? What can I do about the pain and swelling. My leg feels cold and I can't stand for even my  cat to rub on my leg. I also have RA is this making the stroke pain? I am so tired of this pain, I am losing it.

Welcome to the club, I also had a stroke and like most people it affects the right side of your body, Depending on the severity of your stroke only time will tell on how long the suffering will last some people never come out of it and learn to live with it, one of the best drugs that I have found so far is Gabapentin but I'm at the maximum a person can take in a day 3600mgs and also take hydrocodone twists a day but now my doctor brought a new drug into the picture Lyrica and I'm now taking 450mg a day of it and he has backed off the Gabapentin to 1200mg a day, I'm starting to feel like a Guinea pig O well it's about getting the Dose Just right for each person but time will tell.

From what I've been reading you probably have what is called Central Post Stroke Pain (CPSP) or Thalamic Pain Syndrome. There are several treatments that seem to help but you should seek your neurologist.

A combination of low dose amitriptyline (10 - 50 mg at night) plus gabapentin (300 - 1800 mg per day) or pregabalin (50 - 600 mg per day) produces the best pain relief with the lowest incidence of side effects. (taken from some site I don't remember)

Tegretol, Neurontin, Lyrica, or Keppra are the most used medicines

Antidepressants and anticonvulsants are also used

Hope that helps, my father just had a severe stroke and we are still waiting for his recovery.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Stroke is caused by insufficient blood supply to a region due to your increased blood pressure for decades and also due to Diabetes or increased cholesterol intake.
As you have a stroke you damaged some nervous tissue and it is causing loss of strength and feeling of weakness in the region it supplies.
Sometimes people have complete paralysis.
You have to go for reduction of your blood pressure/blood sugar/cholesterol whatever is the cause of stroke and then do physiotherapy.
With lot of commitment and dedication from your end you will gain strength.
Do not lose hope and get well soon bouncing!
Take care
