Hi, this could be occipital neuralgia, lesion of occipital nerve causing pain at the back of head. “Occipital neuralgia is caused by damage to these nerves. Ways in which they can be damaged include trauma (usually concussive), physical stress on the nerve, repetitious neck contraction, flexion or extension, and as a result of medical complications.” Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occipital_neuralgia
Although cervical spondylosis is also a possibility but is usually not associated with scalp burning pain.
What symptoms have you had?
I have had everything from burning scalp, sensitive scalp, head twinges, chronic neck & shoulder pain & yes i do clench my teeth badly- with stress. The burning pain i had was where a hair band would sit (kinda where rams horns are). I have considered occipital neuralgia myself but the doctor constantly tells me its stress which is very annoying.
I have also considered TMJ but the literature i have found hasn't been great.
Dear nickieb,
have they ruled out tmj? I'm just learning about it myself and it can have really odd symptoms that seemed unrelated to the jaw joint but because of the interrelatedness of the nerves can cause burning and pain in mastoid area. Look up the tmj sites and see if it helps. Try ice on the areas. Good luck,
