I am a 32 yr old female. I have been diagnosed with MS (and one neurologist called it benign MS) since 2000, though the diagnosis was more from excluding other possibilities due to the fact that I have not had many test results that make MS a definitive (i.e. spinal tap was normal, first MRIs were neg for lesions, etc.). Since then I have struggled with numbness and pain that put me in a wheel chair for 3 months in 2002; permanent numbness on parts of my legs, face, and torso; and intermittent tingling and numbness elsewhere for the past 8 years (usually on a weekly basis). In 2003 there was 1 lesions found in the left parietal white matter of the brain on a subsequent MRI, and a Thoracic Spine MRI that revealed "atrophy and prominence to the central canal at the level of T5-6 that could either be the result of demyelatiing disease or otherwise "unknown orgin"" as stated in the report.
With that background, I just recently had another MRI, EMG, and nerve conduction tests. The nerve conduction test was normal, but the neurologist that performed my EMG detected a significant delay in my left foot area. He also stated I had a "significant" left foot drop. This was what he said at the time of the tests, I will be getting his actual report tomorrow.
The latest MRI detectect 3 new focus areas described as T2 Hyperintenisties, 2 in the left parietal white matter and 1 in the right parietal white matter. The report says that while they could represent areas of demyelination, the total number, distribution, and morphology are not specifically characteristic for MS.
With all of this said, I'm still unsure of the diagnosis and the treatment I should be following. Putting 2 and 2 together for a layman like myself, it sounds like if it IS ms, it is progressing (due to increase number of focus areas) and I should be considering appropriate treatment. However, I was not notified by my neurologist of the changes from the earlier MRI (he also did not order a thoracic spine MRI to compare with the last) or EMG, so should these things not be of concern to me? I certainly don't want to question the dr., but I also want to be sure that I am diligent with my care.
I would love to know your thoughts! Thanks!
