Reflex exam

What does it mean when the doctor hits certain areas in the arm and knee, etc. for reflex, and the area being examined does not move.  Should it jerk or is it supposed to stay still????

No he did not say a thing.  I have had multi level cervical fusion and also multi level lumbar fusion.
So maybe the lack of reflex is caused from past surgeries.

That happened to me today at my first pain clinic appoinment. He said it was due to neuropathy most likely. He wasn't definate because I have not yet been given a specific diagnosis. Did your doctor say anything when that happened??
