Grunting

Hello, I am asking on behalf of my father who is in his mid 50s,  Last year we all talked and agreed that it was best for him to go on some type of anti-depressants for his mood swings, also to deal with me and my now wife moving out of state and about 500 miles away from him. He did, his doctor placed him on 25mg of celexa which he took up untill this past christmas(about 1 year) he also has been taking 2 types of high blood pressure medication(not sure of the dose or name), since then he has seemed to slip back into his mood swings and has had some close calls with snapping and getting into fights at his work (union electrician). he has also developed this type of grunt, while talking to him on the phone it seems constant, he said he even got worried enough to go to the emergency room and they told him it was a side effect from comming off of celexa. now he did ween himself off of it but he did it "his" way by taking half pills for a while then stopping compltley. he did this within a month. he has told us before this grunting ever happened that he had it when he was a child, my father is a nervous type and constantly worries, and has mild OCD. where did this grunting come from? is it most likley related to the celexa? or when he had it as a kid? and how can it be relieved? im worried it could be some type or turretts or something and im the only one who can really convince him of what to do, so i need to arm myself with as much info as possible. thanks in advance.

I have had the problem many times in my life. I am going through it again presently. I try to stay conscience of it so I can eventually stop. It is very embarrassing to be around anyone in a quiet enviroment. I do have OCD and am extremely high-strung. I really feel relieved after reading your response to that question.I don't take any kind of meds and I really don't want to.

Hello.

The grunting could be a part of the OCD that he has. The basis of grunting could be that grunting allows him to vent his anger. And this has become an automatic habit. It is lees likely to be due to celexa.

The obsessive nature of his does not allow him to resist the temptation to grunt. A grunt is seen as a compulsion.
