Stabbing sensation in thoat

Okay, I've been fighting a cold for over a week now and have been coughing a lot. I have these episodes where I experience a sharp, stabbing sensation at the base of my throat. This triggers a virtually uncontrollable coughing spell which lasts for about 3 minutes or so. The more I try to fight the coughing, the worse it gets. During this cold, I've been getting these attacks about 5 or 6 per day--usually in the mornings. I've had these attacks in the past when there was no cold involved. They were much less frequent, maybe 1 every week or two. The recent frequency is really a bother, especially when I'm in a public place, and has me concerned. Any ideas? BTW, I'm a 52 year old male, very active--lots of cycling and running.

You might try posting this in the Ears Nose and Throat forum as well. Not sure if they have one where doctors answer questions as well. I've had the sharp shooting pains in my throat as well. Have no idea what the cause is. If you find out let me know.

Good luck
