arnold chiari malformation

Can having decompression surgery for symptomatic ACM cause the patient to have a stroke from the surgery.

Hello.

There is no evidence which suggests stroke as a complication of decompression surgery for Chiari malformation.

But if there is a co-existent risk factor for stroke, such as hypertension, small vessel disease, thrombotic arteries or a risk of embolism from somewhere else, the surgery may act as a stress and may bring on the stroke.

I had a stroke DURING my decompression, but havent heard of someone having a stroke because they have chiari.

based on my research sometimes certain symptoms of chiari can manifest at the same time. These symptoms can confused doctors and make them think you had a stroke. I have recently experienced this myself, until the ER doctor talked to my neurosurgeon.
