cardiac arreest and than coma.....now problem is the brain

1 day 1/2 ago my grandfather went into a coma after cardiac arrest. When he first went into cardiac arrest my cousin was there performing cpr on him but could not find a pulse. according to the doctors he was "clinically dead" for 27 minutes. now he is in what the neurologist called a "deep coma" we are told that he will have severe damage, so the question is there ant hope. Is it a possibility he'll come out the coma and if so in what state, what will be different is there anything we or the doctors can do.. I prefer someone with a medical degree to comment please and thanks.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there. Your grandfather was clinically dead for 27 minutes after the cardiac arrest which is a significant duration. He would have sustained irreversible hypoxic injury in his vital organs in that time like the kidneys, the brain, the liver, heart, so it is very difficult to comment the degree of remnant function in these organs. If there has been brain stem damage, there will be vasomotor paralysis which means inability to maintain perfusion and blood pressure. Spontaneous respiration also will be suspended and he will be ventilator dependent. Renal compromise in the form of oliguria, anuria and complete shutdown.
So the prognosis is very guarded. It is best that you take the word of the treating neurologist as the closest prognosis.
Take care.
