nerves

Hi, I have  a problem when I exercise I get areas of reduced vision, a bit like when you have looked at a bright light, these areas are always in the same place, in both eyes. I have seen an opthalmologist who says there is nothing wrong with my eyes, but said perhaps it could be due to circulation or perhaps nerves, I  have had a couple of treadmill tests for blood pressure and ecg in the last few years, and also a carotid artery scan, they are all normal, my blood pressure is also fine, I do have osteoarthritis of the neck, could this be affecting my eyesight in someway by restricting the blood flow, or affecting the nerves, I would be extremely grateful for your advice as this is really worrying, I have had this four about five years

I tried the idea of glucose drinks during exercise and it does seem to help, if this means my blood sugar is low when I exercise is it dangerous, thanks for the help.

Hi there.

One factor that I believe is to be considered in your situation is the possibility of marked reduction in your blood sugar during or after the exercise episode.  Lowered blood sugar can give rise to visual problems that may also be similar to symptoms of inadequate blood supply.  This can be prevented by taking in some form of glucose (juice or energy drinks) at some points during the exercise routine.

Another possibility is that this can be a physiologic response of the blood vessels in or around your eyes, which dilates as a result of exercise.  I'm not sure if there are specific tests for this but this problem would not show up on routine tests.

I doubt if the osteoarthritis is the culprit in this case, and if you can meet with your doctor, you can discuss these things I mentioned.

Regards.
