possible neurological disorder

Hi,

I know someone who has been having frequent stroke-like episodes.  They occur usually within about a month of each other and have been increasing in severity.  This person is only 22 years old and the episodes involves dizziness, speech difficulty, loss of balance, transient paralysis, and migraines.  He has seen many doctors, including neurologists and none of them have been able to give him an idea of what it could be. He has been to the hospital several times and they said it was possibly a TIA, however, it keeps happening so I was just wondering if maybe you could suggest some things it could possibly be so he can ask his neurologist about it.  It is just really frustrating because everyone he sees diagnoses it as something different so I thought maybe you could help by giving a list of things to look out for.  Also, he just recently had an episode and he was still feeling the effects the day after.  He said that his eye was bothering him.  Anyway I really hope you can help.  Thanks so much.

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
It is possible that his eye muscles have become sore due to the headache. It could be due to inflammation in the eye like Iritis or can also be due to Migraine.
A visit to the ophthalmologist will help. In the meantime he can apply cold ice packs over the eyes which will provide relief.
Do keep us posted!

Sorry, it actually turns out that he doesn't have blurred vision.  However, when he moves his eye a certain way it feels sore.  I think it is an after effect of the episode.  Thanks so much for your help.

Thank you so much for responding so soon.  Also, the last episode he had was a couple of days ago and he is still having blurred vision and says he can barely see.  I don't know if that may lead to other possibilities as to what it could be but I thought I would ask to make sure.  Thanks again.

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
There are some possibilities here which could explain his symptoms and they are Migraine, stroke, MS, and a neurological lesion like brain tumor.
Since he has a history of migraines, it is important to rule out complicated migraines which can cause slurred speech, loss of balance and temporary paralysis of one side of the body.
He can discuss all these possbilities with his neurologist. Tests like LP, MRI and CT scan of brain will also help!
