why do I have B6 toxicity when I've never taken B6

I'm told by my neurologist that I have B6 toxicity, but I have never taken B6. I take no pills at all. However, the B6 levels keep coming back at a toxic level. The neurologist feels that the toxic B6 level, that may have been present in my body for many years, is the cause of my peripheral neuropathy in my lower legs and feet and arms and hands. I've read that one can't get a toxic level from food and I'm a very small eater. The only answer I got for the reason  was that my body just doesn't process B6 properly, but he doesn't know why. Is there anything a person can do to alter or reverse the fact that he body isn't properly processing B6?

Hi!

Yes, this is really perplexing. What you ened to find out is whether your kidney and liver function is normal or not. Usually metabolism related defects cause deficiency of vitamin B6. Hence, there is a possibility of poor clearance from the body. Discuss this aspect with your doctor. Also check labels of all cereals, canned foods, juices etc that you consume. Some of them may be fortified with vitamin B6. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.

Yes, kidney and liver function panels come back within range. I eat gluten, dairy, sugar free and don't eat any processed foods. I do check all labels before buying anything. I read somewhere to try to eliminate all foods high in B6. That seems to be fish, meat, poultry, nuts, legumes, as well as bananas and apples and some other foods. My question is, how do I get protein if I eliminate those foods? I'm eating almost vegetarian now and get most of my protein from nuts and legumes in the winter. I don't eat more than about an ounce or two at the most of meat or poultry daily. Any guidance is appreciated.
