Missing 2-year-old found dead near Arizona home

(CNN) -- A 2-year-old who went missing from his home in Dewey, Arizona, on Monday night was found dead Wednesday, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

The body of Emmett Trapp was found by search and rescue personnel at 11:30 a.m. about one mile from his home, lying in a muddy pit once used to collect waste products from a former mining site.

"We are just devastated by the loss of this little boy," sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said.

The area where his body was found on the former Iron King Mine site is being treated as a crime scene, which the sheriff's office described as "common protocol."

The cause of death appears to be a result of spending more than 24 hours exposed to Arizona's elements, Sgt. Jeff Newnum said. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed later Wednesday, he said.

He added that there was "no foul play at Emmett's body that would suggest something was awry."

Emmett was the second 2-year-old boy to go missing from Yavapai County in 10 days.

His case is believed to be unrelated to the disappearance of Sylar Newton -- another 2-year-old who went missing July 25 from a camping site in Rimrock and is presumed dead, D'Evelyn said Tuesday.

Emmett was reported missing by his mother at 8 p.m. Monday, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The mother told authorities that she and her four children were at their home in the Dewey-Humboldt area, about 80 miles north of Phoenix. When the mother awoke from a nap Monday evening, Emmett -- last seen wearing a pajama top, diaper and no shoes -- was missing.

The family dog had also apparently wandered off with Emmett, but returned when called. The mother told police she searched around the home and immediate area without success.

Newnum said the door to the house was unlocked at the time of Emmett's disappearance, and it appears the boy walked as many four miles, crossing hilly, rough terrain, before he was found.

Newnum credited the muddy terrain in the area with helping find Emmett. He said the small footprints around the site indicate the boy "was by himself."

I know what you mean. My son, now 22, used to walk in his sleep, and I would allow him to go outside, supervised by me, of course. Once, he just went out the door, sat in the grass, and cried. I tried to see if he could tell me what was the matter, but he didn't remember. You could hold a conversation with him sometimes. Once, both boys were asleep and conversing. It was pretty weird. hehe. When a kid cries out to God, we mothers have to try as often as possible to be the physical manifestation of God at work. He left the kids in our charge to do his work, and it is hard work, indeed. The army used to have the slogan "The hardest job you'll ever love," but motherhood is more so.

You have to watch them 24/7.  I know my boys would sleep walk.  We'd see them wandering about and have to carry them back to their rooms.  They were asleep  the whole time.  The oldest tried to go out the door.  Thumb locks on sliding glass doors and double dead bolts work wonders keeping them in.

I've always told mine that my #1 job is to keep them safe until they're ready to leave the nest.  That's why they can't do certain things, Not safe.  I don't always win the popularity contests but that's not why mothers are here.  We are their parents, not their friends.

What kind of mother takes a nap in the daytime with a toddler at home and leaves the doors unlocked? It goes without saying, this makes everyone sad and angry. I dropped an online friend from another site I used to be a member of because her two little boys aged 3 and 4, snuck out of their bedroom window by making a rope of a bedsheet and were found at the Fire Dept. which was nearby. Thing is, the girl was on the computer 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week and demonized the little boys in her online rants regarding them, and one of those boys ran away a second time. Still, DHS did not remove them from her custody. The boys deffacated in their pants and would paint the walls with the fecal matter. She would go on a rant and show photos. All the while, this horrible excuse for a mother was trying to cheat online with another man while her husband was at work. Last I'd heard, he busted her. People nowadays are insane. I like that line from the movie, "The Crow." In it, He says, "Mother is the word for 'God' on the lips of every child." I really wish more women would take this into consideration because it is the ultimate truth in all of the universe.

i cried when I read this last night.. he had walked 4 miles and they found him because of his little footprints in the mud.   My heart aches for this little one although I know there is no place better than in gods arms..   It is so sad that he spent his last hours searching for his mom alone...

Makes you wonder what is happening to people's memories?  Are we so stressed and tired, we cannot handle things?

She wasn't thinking straight to not shore up the doors, etc. so he was safe.  I think they will have to investigate the matter to figure out whether she did everything to ensure his safety.  I wasn't there.  The outcome is not good.  A precious little boy's life is gone and family members must be heartbroken.

What a horrible thing to happen.  Personally, I don't know if I could survive if one of my children died. I really don't.

That being said, there are a lot of questions here.  I saw this story on Nancy Grace this evening.  The mom apparently started her nap around 2pm.  Now I don't blame a mom with young children taking a nap, but you have to make sure that the children cannot get into any type of trouble.  A few years back, a little 3 yr old boy in our neighborhood, went outside while his mom napped.  He was found a few doors down by the owners of the house when they arrived home from work.  He was found dead in their pool.  Mom never even knew he was missing and was still asleep when they police came.  She went to jail for negligent homicide.

I think this mother was criminally negligent.  The door was open.  She went to bed knowing the children could get out.  That is inexcusable with children this age.

I would nap, but always the alarm on.  Mine would always come get me first thing when they woke up.  Some other friends would either lay down in the family room while the kids watched TV or would lay down in the kid's bedrooms.  Doors were always locked!

I think we're going to see charges on this one.
