Illinois House approves drivers licenses for illegal immigrants
(Reuters) - The Illinois House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to grant temporary drivers licenses to illegal immigrants, the final legislative step before Democratic Governor Pat Quinn is expected to sign the measure into law.
Illinois would be the fourth state to offer some form of permits along with Washington state and New Mexico, which offer drivers licenses, and Utah, which provides driving permits.
The vote in the General Assembly or House, was 65 to 46, after the state Senate on December 4 overwhelmingly approved the legislation.
Supporters said an estimated 250,000 illegal immigrants drive in Illinois and the measure would make the roads safer by subjecting migrants to driving tests.
Republican opposition to drivers licenses for illegal immigrants faded after the November 6 election when Hispanics voted heavily for the reelection of President Barack Obama and Democrats in the Illinois state legislature.
The Illinois measure would extend to illegal immigrants the existing temporary visitor driver's license, used by legal immigrants. The licenses are "visually distinct" from ordinary licenses, with a purple background and the words "not valid for identification" on the front, said Lawrence Benito, chief executive of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

It took me money and years of waiting to get my green card..then a another few to become a citizen..I think the same rules should be for all and I dont get how they think its fair to allow any shorter route ..

You know...people get upset, and don't think deportation is the way to handle it (I disagree)...so okay, fine, don't deport them, but they do not get ONE thing that a US citizen is entitled to, until they meet the legal requirements to be here. No license, no gov't aid, no healthcare, nothing.
I would never expect to go into another country illegally, live there, and expect them to accomodate me. I would expect to be sent back, or arrested, something.

I see it like this. The liberals stand on this is, "they're already in the country and have established homes and families". What they don't pay attention to is the words "not here legally". To them, those words don't mean anything and for the individuals who are trying to do the right thing and to the ones who've gone through the process.... I'd like to see them step up and voice an opinion. They above anyone else should be cheesed off.

Just a shame...I mean, if you think about it, we're discriminating against people before they even get in the door. For a person looking to become a citizen, imagine how that would look? Discouraging in the least...wouldn't leave a good taste in my mouth for sure...about the way we run things.
"What about the people waiting to get into this country....." They're screwed! They don't get the preferential treatment boarder hoppers do or the middle Europeans who let their work visas expire and get married to stay....
And the argument that we were all immigrants doesn't stand up, IMO...back when our ancestors came to this country, they did so properly, legally. No comparison.

That's just crazy. What about the people waiting to get in this country, with something to offer, who has gone through all the proper red tape?? If I were them, I'd say....forget it. I mean, that's nuts.

Being politically correct, I don't think you can rightfully call them "illegal" because the courts have not deemed them individually.

Well how else are they supposed to get to work if they don't have gas cards? They break the laws, don't pay taxes...expect sometime soon a min. wage for illegal aliens.
