So very true Brice...the same very much applies here.  I was talking to someone in our local gov't today. Now, it was about the welfare system which as you well know is something I think needs a very serious overhaul, so different topic, but same theory.  They said that although most in gov't agree, the job is so big and daunting, that it's almost easier to just leave it alone.  How's that for dedication.  "yep, it's a problem, but it's easier to keep doing what we are doing then address it".  This applies to so many areas and issues.  Sad and scary all at once.  We pay these folks how much?  To do what?  I can tell you, they sure aren't looking out for me and my tax dollars.

Blame for this stuff can be blamed on unions, antiquated trade policies, etc.  The way we do business as a nation is flawed.  Special interest groups lobby for laws that make it tougher for industry to operate in this country, taxation is some circumstances is out of control and has companies running over seas, some unions requiring ridiculous pay for unskilled labor jobs.... the list simply goes on.

It seems as if nobody is looking at the individual little problems, they are just trying to have a quick fix for everything.  The entire system needs an overhaul.  We will continue to get the same results if we continue to do business the way we are doing it.

This is so very frustrating! I think its so expensive here to make things not only because of the pay, but there are sooooo many laws that companies would have to obey, and they are costly things. Usually for our protection, sometimes not.

As to gardening? Well, lets just say government is going crazy, making it harder for every day people to garden or raise their own meat.
Basically the days of mini farms are over. I also read the laws of one of the states in N.E. and found that all food grown can be claimed by the government at any time.

Sounds like they are trying to pull one over on you guys as well.  Frustrating isn't it.  We darn well have a right to know where things are coming from, but instead there are all these little loopholes around truthful labeling.  This has become my new cause and I have been on a letter writing campaign on this issue.  I have no doubt they aren't listening, but maybe if enough Canadians (and sounds like Americans need to do it as well) complain, something will happen.

You know, the truth is though, much of this is self created.  I know here in Canada (and I would bet it is similar there) we want it cheap.  So with the work force in countries like China, Mexico, India, etc. willing to work for next to nothing in horrific conditions, I guess companies are doing what they have to do.  To make it at home is so much more expensive given our rate of pay (which really can't go down, not with our cost of living) and our workforce regulations.  With the current economic climate, people would be up in arms if costs went up, so this is the result.  Of course, we are making the economic situation worse with the closure of local manufacturing plants, etc. and people getting laid off.  We are in a big old catch 22 now.

Still, that doesn't excuse proper labeling.  Regardless of the fact that we have created this situation, we still have a right to choose whether or not we want to pay more to support our own economy.

Well, good news.(sarcastically)  It appears our country is no better than Canada. (no offense meant to anyone except to those in charge of tricking people into thinking they are purchasing food made in one country only to be from elsewhere.)  So,,, I was looking at our relish that we bought because it was Cains and said from MN. Well, I called the Cains company and they said "oh we no longer own the pickles" Sooo, I ask who does and its some company called Gedeys or something like that. I called them, and they said their pickles and relish is made in the US, BUT half their cucumbers are from Mexico.
Seriously, this just really disgusts me.

Ah, one of my favorite topics for discussion.  Buying anything that is truly "made in America" is basically a thing from the past.  I defy anyone to purchase almost anything mechanical, (toaster, dish washer, t.v., car, etc) and have every component of that item be made in the U.S.  I honestly don't think it can be done.

I hear you.  For all I know it could have been caught in Japan, shipped here and packaged here and stamped made in Canada.  Isn't that the most ridiculous thing ever?  I cannot for the life of me understand how they get away with it, it makes not a whit of sense whatsoever.  I am so suspicious of all food items now, mainly because we know for a fact that many countries do not have the same food handling standards we and the US do.  Supposedly there is a crackdown on imported stuff having to meet the same guidelines, but still...if I want to only buy food made here or in the US, that should be my right.  I have a right to know where in the heck the stuff originated from.  Ok, now I am ranting...but it makes me soooo mad.

On a side note, if it's salmon, it probably is from here.  We are well known for our salmon, tonnes of fishing here still.  So your probably safe.  If you do write I would love to know what they tell you or what you find out.  This is turning into a pretty big issue for us Canucks, especially with all the food scandals such as the one you mentioned.

That is so annoying my latest find was some really nice cans of salmon, not cheap either , I looked at the label as I always do and there is was not distributed but made in Canada..that ***** I am going to put in a complaint if its not made there ,I am going to look up the company and e-mail them. Many times with those other countries they put distributed  in  the US... what the Heck...  China hasn't got a good record for quality stuff look at that Baby formula  powder scandal

You are correct in that statement about it saying made in Canada.  It leaves us here in a tough situation.  For example, something can be made in China, but if a component of it (doesn't necessarily have to be the majority of it), or the packing (think Cereal) was made here, they can label it Made In Canada.  Pretty wrong isn't it.  It makes me so mad.  There is legislation out there to enforce more accurate labeling, but so far our Congress hasn't done a darn thing about it.  So we happily buy food we think is made here, but in reality it could have just been packaged here. Not quite the same thing.  I am one who always prefers to buy Made in Canada first, Made in the US second.  If I can't support us, I'm going to support you.

I now do most of my shopping at our local Farmers Market.  At least then I know for sure it was grown locally.  It's really frustrating isn't it.

But I heard from someone from Canada, it can say made in Canada if its packaged there, but not made there. They too are into buying Chinas junk.

I agree, we should buy made in America when possible. Actually I go so far as to try to purchase things locally made when possible, to support the local neighbors. (dont have  much money, but when I can thats what  I do)

I'd like to see regulations so that companies don't outsource jobs but if that can't be done  or in the meantime people can buy from companies have do have any product they sell made in America. I know for a while there was an effort to have people do that and that should occur again because at a time of a recession jobs should be for Americans first.

Thats not going to happen Obama doesn't want us to...the work goes to China  and other countries, he'll be sending out work to the middle east before too long we already send a huge amount of money .Its past time Congress stood up and was counted ,they are really useless or get out of the way and let the people do it......
