I have not taken anything you have said or believe personally.  I also have not felt attacked or anything.  It's a debate, and I see it as such.  I also never intend my comments to be taken personally or as an attack.  Like most that post here I have strong feelings on certain issues and enjoy discussing them.  I learn from others, and perhaps they have even learned something from me on occasion.  No offense taken nor intended.

At the end of the day I am just grateful to live in a society where I can have my opinions and not be persecuted for them, popular opinions or not.

I think you missed my point. My point is, we all believe what we believe is true and are all entitled to that belief. According to your belief you are a Christian. According my belief I am a Christian. According to someone else view of what that means, they are a Christian.
I was only trying to show how so many of us can say we are Christians and not necessarily view the other persons claim to Christianity as the way we view true Christianity.
I was not trying to attack you at all, or insult you. Please know my intent was sincere in just trying to explain.
Like I said, and you also said, in the end only God can judge.

Ok, when it comes to who is in charge of the country, at least my country, I have no problem at all with it being a Christian.  That is sort of my whole point...I don't care what their religious affiliation is.  What I don't want is them using their religious beliefs as their guideline.  I feel strongly that my relationship with God is very personal. It's between him and I.  I do not need nor want a politician dictating my moral values, my core beliefs or anything else with a religious overture to it.  I will always vote for the person that I feel will make our country stronger, better and has the entire populations interest at heart, not just those that believe the way he or she does.  That is what I want in a leader.  Now, if that person happens to be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddist or whatever, it means not a thing to me.  Just as I believe what I believe, they should be able to as well.  I just don't want their belief being part of their policy making.  I think that it is a dangerous combo, regardless of what religion they are.

As for the real Christian issue....I have to tell you that I become very resentful when someone tells me I am not a "real" Christian because I do not necessarily believe in literal interpretation of the Bible.  I am comfortable and confident in my feelings, and again, it is between me and God.  But when someone gets to the point that they feel they can speak for Him?  I think they have crossed a line that shouldn't be crossed.  No one person is above another.  And I do mean no one.  In my world, God loves all and he is the only one that can truly judge.

The muslim question..... I knew you would bring that up. lol
Ok, all i can say here is
God says we are to love all, and that means, muslims, jews, hindu, etc...
All muslims are individuals, like we are all individuals that profess Christianity. That is obvious, because some muslim woman hide their faces, some have pose in bikinis or show their pregnat belly. Sooo yes they are all different.
When it comes to politics. You and some others on here have made it clear you dont want a Christian ruling the country because they tend to affect decisions that you dont like. For exmple they may try to vote against certain behaviors or whatever. You feel Chrisitianty needs to be left our of the government. Well, I agree that the people in this country have a right to have what is the majority wants, even if it goes against Gods teaching. That said, thats why I cant run for anything, because I cant go promote or vote for things that I believe are sin.
I also believe that will be the same situation for a muslim politician. I completely seperate muslim neighbor from muslim politicians. I dont trust politicians. They lie, so if I have to chose one liar over another, I will chose the one I think is less likely make deals with someone that will take away my rights or change our country completely. Thats just my opinion.

adgal,
I think where the confusion lies, is that a lot of people only pick parts of the bible and use that as their religion, when the bible is complete for a reason. Of course that is their right to choose what they want to believe.
You yourself said in your mind a real Chrisitan is accepting of all.
So we all have what we feel a real Christian is based on our beliefs. Its natural that we will vary.
My Christian beliefs may be different than yours. For example my beliefs are based on scriptures that are repeated throughout the whole bible.
"There is one God and one mediator the man Christ Jesus" (Jesus is God and the only way to God)
"I an the Father are one. If you see me, you see the Father"
"There is none other name in heaven whereby we can be saved"
"If you believe in your heart the Lord Jesus that God has raised him from the dead, though will be save"
"If you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is Lord, then shalt thou be saved"
So this here is the basic of the Christianity that I believe. Scripture also has a repeating theme and tells us how to know when someone else is saved. This is LOVE.
"on the day of judgment we will have boldness, because as HE is, so are we in this world"
And all the verses before it were talking about love--loving God and loving fellow man.
Then there is scripture that says if we dont forgive others, God will not forgive us.
In the end, only God can and will judge, not us. None of us can judge the heart, but God teaches us in the bible how to recognize other  believers. They will have fruits of the Spirit of God. (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self control) -I may have forgotten some.
Again, God also says to be holy for He is holy. There is scripture that clearly states who will not be saved, and its those that walk in a life of choosing to sin doing the things God tells us not to. (not talking about those trying to change)
Anyway, when I say Christian, this is what I mean by that, people who hold only to Jesus being the way to heaven, and they LOVE.
I am sure if you talk to a thousand people you will find many other religious views of Christianity. This is my belief. Its not meant to attack or hurt anyone, but we cant believe something other than what we believe. Like you believe what you believe and Teko what Teko and Margy what Margy, and Bryce what Bryce. Our beliefs are our beliefs and who we are.

And now of course the question I have to ask....if it doesn't make sense to lump all Christians together, then why is it ok to lump all Muslims together?  Not talking about folks on this forum, talking about the rather offensive words I heard come out of the mouths of some of the candidates in the Republican debate. Why is that ok?

If we are talking about Christianity, I always say there are those that talk the talk and then those that walk the walk.  I like what Teko said...some will wield it like a sword, trying to claim power because of it.  I have had people claiming to be devout actually tell me that I cannot be a "real" Christian because I am pro gay rights and pro choice. How dare someone tell me what I feel in my heart.  Then there are the real Christians, who even if they don't agree are accepting of all.  Happy to go about their lives knowing what they know without feeling the need to press their own beliefs on others.  Those are the people I respect and try to model myself after.  There is a huge difference in my opinion.

Brice,
Maybe you misunderstood what I said.
I was saying that some claim America was a Christian nation at first and others say it wasnt. What I was saying about the Indians was that IF America was a real Christian nation, then how can they justify stealing from the Indians. (never mind the small pox)
Those are NOT Christian behaviors, and God would NEVER condone it,  so please dont assume all professing Christians would consider or excuse such wickedness.
You asked if Christ saved the indiginous peoples. I am not sure how to answer this without offending you. I believe Christ loves all died for all.
I get the feeling you think Christians should not share their beliefs because you feel Christians have ruined and harmed others. Can I please explain it from my point of view?
I want to share my beliefs because I believe its truth. Did you know the bible says to share what we believe but not to force it? Its says if someone doesnt want to hear, then move on. I think what you are disgusted with is the behaviors of people that claim Christianity but again, Christianity means many things to many people.
To lump all Christians together is like lumping all atheist together. I was reading on an atheist site and the comments were people saying all Christians need to be erased from the earth. They blame all the problems in the world on Chrisians. Much like Hitler blamed everything on the Jews. I know not all atheists are hateful. Not all Christians have the same faith either. They may use God and Jesus, but they are not the same, and often its not even the same God or Jesus. (that is also in the bible that there will be false Jesus)
I know you dont like Christians, and honestly I understand why, but I dont think its wrong for Christians to share their beliefs because they are doing it in love. Forcing however, is not right, ever. Thats not really possible anyway, because its a heart thing not an outward thing. No one can force someone to believe something.
I am sorry that people who claim Christ have done so many things wrong to others. I can not control what they did or do. Not all are like that.

I'm still going to say the the "Pledge of Allegiance" is about unity as a nation.  Take a good look at the Native Americans that were indoctrinated to God.... they had their own beliefs, lived by them, and were fine until "whitey" got ahold of them.  Does anyone think Christ saved the indiginous peoples of America????  Did Christ compel the white man to introduce small pox in blankets to the Indians????

I can tell you this.... the Indians would have known nothing about Christ or small pox if it werent for Europeans that came to settle in this country.  I cannot say they are better off for either.

This is all another example of extremes to me. What do the words hurt? Nothing as far as a christian is concerned. However the same people complaining about this, would be raging at the thought of saying say a muslim prayer in front of a group of christians. I should say it is quite obvious what the problems could become. Do you want muslim ways crammed down your throat, or how about jehovah witness ways, or mormon. I look at it this way, you have Christians and then YOU have Christians. True ones and the others that use the name to wield power over others. True christians have a relationship with god, read the bible and pray. The power grabbing ones use it as a tool to reach others who call themselves christians to manipulate and have power over the people. A true christian already knows this and realizes that what they see going on in the secular field is only going to lead to a restriction of christians rights to freely practice their religion. Did you know according to the Bible that one day you will only have access to the word from what is in your heart? He says memorize the words while you can. Why do you think he tells us this? Yes, Christianity will be hated, feared and outlawed. You are already seeing a rising up against it because people associate the religious right with politics and all the other people are crying fowl. It has started, what was predicted in the Bible. There is no turning back. It will now be a matter of time so you might want to read and memorize the bible now.

Yes the phrase "under God" was added in 1954 by a direct order of president Eisenhower. I don't really see it as a concern and I would not try to detract from anyone's freedom of religion. People are free to recite the pledge or not and I don't believe it has to be changed back. There are so many issues happening now from the state of the economy to the war that people should try to find other causes to be concerned about. I believe it can be left as is.

As much as I still don't believe religion belongs in public settings (any religion) I still don't understand the issue with the Pledge of Allegience.  It is honoring your country and even if things have evolved so that all religious beliefs are welcome (as they should be), it was still a country founded on Christian principals.  Also, as Brice said so well, God can be whatever God you choose to believe in.  Almost all religions speak of God in some way shape or form.  You could also leave it out.  So I don't think that an actual prayer should be offered up, but I do see the Pledge as unique and special, and a wonderful part of your history.  However, allegience is in your heart not in your words.  It's like anything to me....anyone can talk the talk, I am always far more impressed with those that walk the walk.

Well in fairness, I have to say, I went to public school and I was taught in history books that our country was founded on Christian principals. (however, I am not sure where killing off the Indians and stealing their land falls into Christain) but  this is what I was taught in school--America and God went together.
Now kids are taught that our country was not founded on Christian principals.
It is possible that the history books have been changed, just like they say the pledge was changed.
This would explain a lot of the confusion.
Its the only explaination I can find to make sense of any of this.

I was talking to this girl the other day who attended a Christian HS and she said the words under God was added to the pledge. She said she learned this at her Christian school.
I googled it today and found this

Margy, I didnt want you to misunderstand me. I do think its sad that things are the way they are now, but the respect has been long gone for God. Its a reflection of the current condition of our country, and there is a reason it has come to this, as I said above.
I think I look at it differently. I guess to me the name of God or Jesus is Holy, and it puzzles me when I hear someone cursing with Gods name only to then turn and make a pledge or vow using his name.

As I've mentioned before, I am not real religious but am spiritual.  With NBC dropping the words "one nation, under God" just really lets us all know where they sit.  (I am neither for or against the words.)

Having very little religious education in my youth, I always thought of those words providing unity, and with God.... that is all of our Gods or whatever you believe in.

Personally, I'm glad I was raised as casually as I was in reference to religion.  Not having any one notion stuffed into my head has allowed me to be more accepting to others beliefs and has made me feel welcome in having my own beliefs.

bbxx, your last 2 paragraphs sum up my feelings about organized religion.  Too many Sunday morning Christians....  I've got respect for anyone who walks the walk when it comes to their religion.

Well you know, it really makes no difference. They dont believe in or worship God, so why fake it. I am sorry to see this, dont get me wrong, and I dont mean this as an insult to you personally,  but right now there are a whole lot of people running around claiming to be Christians that are a walking contradiction of what God says we are to be (love and holy). I guess if I am honest I feel like its the fault of Christians everywhere that things are as they are. The example set has been of people living just as corrupt and sinful lives as those who deny the existance of God. (not saying all that deny the existence of God live immoral lives--I know some who are super moral people) The majority of Chrisian churches are preaching what people want to hear (God wants you to be wealthy, God is ok with you living selfish sinful lives etc..as long as you vote republican). This is not right with God, but it is what it is. Am I a walking example of perfection, no.
The power of God has  been deduced to bizarre diaplays of mayhem in some churches, and in other churches its nothing more than a feel good fest of people appearing holy during worship or Sunday service instead of the power of God setting people free from the destructive forces of sin.
Until people see that God changes lives, setting people free from sin which destroys, and heals the physically sick, and  causes people to love and treat others with kindness, forgive those who tresspass against them, and help the poor, and care for the sick etc..we are not going to see anything other than a complete disrespect for God.
