I'm watching a story on this issue right now. It is showing clips of some Dems standing up for the right to own guns, and some Republicans supporting the ban on assault rifles. It does seem primarily dems supporting the ban and primarily republicans going against it, but there are a few at least that aren't going along with the party line.
I still personally don't think gun control will resolve the issue. I still haven't seen any real evidence that that is where the problem lies. There is just so much more to this issue, and I do think a big part of it is the sensationalism around these horrific events.
Oh, and I also heard a stat today that the majority of gun deaths are a handgun. Can't remember what the actual numbers were.

I guess this would include the 22, which would ban almost all 22 rifles.
