high ast/alt levels

I have high AST and ALT levels shown on recent blood work - I don't drink or smoke, I rarely ever take any medications.  I had gastric bypass surgery and am now within a normal BMI - I exercise regularly.  I am a 48 yr old female.  Why would these levels be high and what can  be done about it?

I dont go back to see the doc for a bit yet, but I was alarmed when the levels showed high again - the test was redone in case the first results were a fluke.  Thanks for the info.  Hopefully she will lead me in the direction of liver cleansing formulas that are natural, if not, i'll be back!

Did you talk to your doc about it?  I'd probably want to know if he or she considers it worrisome, and if so, I'd get it done again to see if it was an anomaly.  If it isn't, then you need to find out if there's any liver disease.  If the doc doesn't consider it serious, the way to attack it is to work on your liver.  Bypass surgery can obviously interfere with the body's absorption of nutrients and can also affect the liver's ability to process fat soluble substances, but it could be many things.  There are many natural milk thistle based formulas for liver cleansing, but again, you first need to find out if this is just an anomaly and if not, what the problem might be.  isn't your doc talking to you about it?
