Too much vitamin D?

A recent blood test showed my vitamin d level to be very low. My doctor gave me supplements to take. Each pill is 1,000 IU and he told me to take 5 a day. I told him I though that was too much and he said to then take two for now. Is 2,000 IU a day too much? On the label it says not to take more then 1 a day but he wanted me to take 5!

There are people who take up to 10 000 UI a day. It depends on your body, whether or not your body absorbs it properly. And also depends on your over all health condition how much you should take. It varies. Keep getting your blood work done and keep an eye on your levels. I myself seem to be having toxicity from a very low dose of 1500 UI a day. It can cause a build up of calcium in your blood and arteries and other organs. There is also known cases where people took over 1 million UI daily for over a month and they recovered as normal within 3 months. A baby also was being given a high dose of 600 000 UI daily until his caregivers doctor realized the mistaken dose. The baby was perfectly fine once the proper doses were started. So essentially 1000 to 2000 is not a high dose, even 5000 as long as your body is using it. Our bodies have an automatic function where it stops storing and just flushes the excess through the kidneys, but like I said some of our bodies don't function as well when we have certain health issues.. MS, Thyroid, pituitary... a number of things can effect it.

Can taking 2000 IU of vitamin D3 be the cause of PVC's. It seems like that is when my PVC's started. I just stoped taking them and PVC's have slowed down quite a bit.

I also take 5000IU a day. One of the key things is which form of vitamin D you are taking. There is vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. D2 is a synthetic and will do little to nothing for you, because it is hard for your body to absorb. D3 is a natural supplement that the body uses freely. Just food for thought. good luck!

Thanks for responding to my question. I did think that 5,000IU was too much. I have only been taking 2 of the the pills for a month now.

@ jasmine1988  You mention that it can result in abnormal heart rhythms. For the past tthree days I have been having a large number of PVCs. I went to the ER yesterday and the EKG was normal, except for the one PVC that was on it. I didn't to tell them about the supplements as I didn't think it was related. I am currently going to stop taking them and see my family doctor next week.

Hello Philip~My naturopath had the lab draw some blood to see how my levels were and they were extremely low, so, she had me take 5 drops of Vitamin D equal to 5,000 IU every morning, I have been doing this for a year, and have had no ramifications. She had it re-drawn about a month ago, and it was some better, so, she cut me back to 2,000 IU a day. Even when I am in the sun, etc, I do not absorb it.

I have asked another naturopath about this, and she said it is perfectly safe and OK to be taking amounts that high, that my system obviously has a difficult time assimilating it and to continue until further notice.

So, in answer to your question, no, it is NOT high, especially if you are very low. I like the liquid drop form myself, it gets in the blood stream faster, just my opinion however. You would have to be on it is very high amounts for a very long time to notice any adverse ramifications from it.

I also think that's quite a high dose, and I strongly feel you shouldn't exceed 2 a day. in excess, it has been linked to nausea, poor appetite, vomitting, and even weight loss. There is an associated raised level of calcium in blood, resulting in heart rhythm abnormalities.

I've never heard of that high a dose just because someone was low.  Sometimes very high doses are used for specific conditions on a temporary basis, but the highest daily dose I've heard of for Vitamin D is 1000 iu.  Get a second opinion.  Remember, you can get vitamin D just by going out in the sun, and since it's fat soluble it stores in the body, it doesn't flush right out.  Don't know if there's a danger, but  a good policy is to only take what one needs.  You can also get some by eating wild caught fish, but my guess is you're avoiding the sun at peak hours to avoid cancer.  That's what's causing the widespread deficiencies of vitamin D that are being reported.
