Hello there,
If you have low sun input and a diet that doesn't include vitamin D i would suggest you to take 1,000UI vitamin D daily( a good vitamin D 1,000 UI can be bought from your local food supplement store,. That will help you on the calcium and phosphosrus absorbtion and will make your test turn back to normal.
Best regards,
M4
My level was also 20. My doctor told me to get over-the-counter D3 and take 4-5000 IE per day in three months. I will then have another D Hydroxy test. The prescription vitamin D is mostly D2 and inferior to the OTC. My symptoms are severe fatige, achiness and insomnia.
Just read your 2009 post and am relieved that you did not believe that 400 iu/day was adequate for Vit D deficiency. I hope you are in perfect health now! You might be interested in the presentation made to the European Calcified Tissues Symposium by Dr. Michael Holick, a top Vit D scientist from Boston University Medical School at www.vitamindhealth.org. Click on the link under External Links, wait for it to load (3-5 minutes), then watch for about 35 min for current info on VitD deficiency. Also, an excellent resource is www.vitamindcouncil.com.
A prescription isn't necessary. Getting natural D3 is the best route to go. Prescription D is really D2. It is a synthetic form of Vitamin D and is very difficult for the body to process. Vitamin D3 is a natural form of Vitamin D that can be fully absorbed by the body. 5000 IU would be good until you get back up to normal. Then you should continue to maintain it with a lower dosage.
