Why am I not loosing weight?

This is the first time I have posted in this forum I'm from the cyster site. I am so angry this morning I smashed my scales up. I am 32 and have never had a problem dieting....till now! I had surgery in July and put on approx 20 pounds, I now weigh 132 pounds and I am 5 ft 4. I want to loose about 14 pounds. I started eating about 1200 cals a day, 20 mins a day on tread mill and 60/80 sit ups. Initially I was loosing about 2 pounds a week which I thought was painfully slow but when I weighed this morning to my horror I have lost nothing this week - its impossible, makes no sense. Sometimes I eat as little as 800 cals never more than 1200 why am I not loosing weight. I know about the body holding onto fat stores but thats never happened to me before - why now.

Sounds pathetic but I am so depressed I cant tell you please help

Hi, Im having the same problem. I'm 14 years old 5 ft and weigh 164 (haven't weighed myself recently) but I went from 172 to 164 but I don't feel any different. I am dieting and exercising everyday. The problem I think is I'm probably under-eating. I dont know how many calories I'm eating. This is usually my typical day. breakfast- toasted wheat bread with scrambled egg whites and coffee with a fruit. I wait till I'm hungry again which is around lunch time and eat unsalted peanuts or a fruit. Then, I wait for dinner and eat rice and chicken with lots of veggies. I exercise after my snack which is before dinner. I exercise about 20 minutes on the treadmill and do 180 sit-ups and 20 leg lifts. I don't feel any diff. except I'm more energized. Tell me what's wrong?

More weight is lost through limiting calories than by exercising. Exercise alone will not give the desired result. Sleep is important to weight loss. If you are continually short on sleep you may not lose anything.

This is the first time I have written to this forum.  I am a 50 year old female, 5'9" and 207 pounds.  I joined Jenny Craig and they put me on a 1200 cal/day diet.  The first week I lost 2 pounds, the second only 1.  Since then, three weeks now, I have not lost anything.  I am walking about 1 mile per day, 5 days per week.  Can anyone tell me why I am not losing weight?  I am very frustrated!

In response to Jason01....please read what i wrote above. Also, I would suggest eating about 5 times a date. 3 (small-medium) meals, and snacks (healthy ones) in between. This keeps your metabolism going. Since your diet plays a huge role in weight loss, I would also say you might wanna consider shopping at Trader Joe's or Wholefoods if those are available to you. TJ's is usually a lot less expensive, but sometimes a lot more limited to selection. The reason why I say this is because they are conscious of providing you with products that don't contain ingredients that you can't pronouce...and do you no good. They also help with that whole high fructose corn syrup/ refined sugars/ hydrogenated oils situation. You will be healthier and losing weight if you try this!!

A question that I would raise, is what does your diet consist of? If you are substituting with artificial sweeteners/ products containing them, you might want to reconsider. I would suggest going a more natural route: raw sugars (just watch the calorie intake) or stevia, which is similar to artificial sweetners, but comes from a natural source. A key to weight loss is to completely cut out hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup ( which can suprisingly be found in an overwhelming amount of products....even in things that are already naturally sweetened like applesauce. Lot's of things that you think you are eating that are a "healthy" choice contain this, so just be aware of it. I would suggest choosing product that are easier on your body as well- instead of white (bleached) bread/ products- shoot for whole grain/ whole wheat (again, make sure they don't contain the high fructose corn syrup). I did this and saw huges results after a couple of weeks. As for exercise, I am not a fitness guru, but just make sure that you are switching up what you do. Your muscles have memory and if you don't switch up your routine, you will see a decrease in results.

your BMR=1423.8  X TDEE=1.5 = 2135.7 I would suggest subtracting 500 caloreis and see what happens if nothing in a few weeks than decrease another 250 but no more or you will put yourself in starvation mode. Drink lots of water and eat small frequent meals.

Also MEASURE yourself and find someone to take your fat %. You might be building muscle which is why no weight loss but inchs lost. And you want muscle not fat :) I do hope this helps

Everyone's given some good advice. I was also thinking you're probably under-eating. Your body starts to store fat when it feels it's not getting enough. My doctor once told me that I shouldn't eat any less than 1000 calories. I am also 5'4" and I was told to stay between 1000-1200 calories to lose weight. I just wanted to add that since you don't have a lot of weight to lose, it's going to take longer. Plus, 1-2 lbs lost a week is very healthy...
Good luck!!!

Good point spade, yes measure belly, stomach, calves, quads, and biceps. Do this on the same day every week as well as weight yourself. You will loose but not always pounds. Last week I lost1/2 inch in belly and 1/4 inch in waist ans gained a pound. I would rather have the inches gone than the pounds. :):):):)

Have you been monitoring the size of your waste?  Since you are working out you are probably putting on muscle mass which weighs MORE than fat.  Scales alone, are not a good indicator of weight loss.

You also have to remember that our bodies carry around water weight and this amount changes all the time. Im not sure if maybe you are close to your cycle, but when I am getting close to mine, I tend to retain more water weight than I normally would any other time of the month.

I just figured out your calories and I really think you are under eating.

BMR- what you burn at rest  1379.6

TDEE- BMR x energy level (yours is 1.55)

1379.6 x 1.55 = 2138.3

now you take out 500- 750 calories a day no more. and then when you work out you burn more calories :)

Now what I do is eat 6 small meals with protein in each one and complex carbs out by 4 th meal and fiberous ones in like broccoli. And fruit out by 2 or 3rd meal. calories tapper down word threw the day b/c more active earlier in the day.

I really hope this helps.

Good luck
