Hi,

I have OCD and intrusive thoughts. I was on Zoloft for 7 years. It helped for a while but eventually it stop working or it got to the point where it wouldn't improve. Libidio was ok at the beginning but got recuded through the years. So I went to Paxil (20mg/day) it really did help, even much more than Zoloft. OCD was almost gone and also intrusive thoughts, However, libido stayed low.

I recently started Buspar to get my libido back and decreased the Paxil dose (5mg once or twice a week) + Buspar 20-30mg daily. Buspar is known to reverse SSRIs sexual side effects + its good for anxiety.

For all the research I've done, it seems like you will always need an SSRIs for OCD, so I try to keep the SSRI to lowest dose possible that provides benifit + a medication that will help keep libido normal.

Maybe Wellbutrin + an SSRI might work for you?

SSRIs are good while you are single. As soon as you start a relationship, they become a problem. I'm a 24 year old male.

I've been on prozac for 10 years and hate the weight gain.  no matter what I do I keep the extra weight.  I thought getting off the prozac an going onto Welbutrin would help.  But, Wellbutrin did nothing for my BDD anI had to return to prozac.  I guess you won't know if it helps unless you try.

Wow, I really never gave it a thought when my PD prescribed Wellbutrin to me. But I can say that it helped me significantly. I do feel a lot better, don't have mood swings as I did before and if I stop taking my pills I do feel terrible.

What the doc said when I asked was that it will not make me gain weight or increase my appetite. The best thing to do is ask your doctor because what works for one might not necessarily work for others. As any drug you just have to try and see how it works for you and only you.

As already stated, Wellbutrin enhances dopamine and norepinephrine. It has little or no affect on Serotonin. Therefore, it is a completely different approach to treatment. It is not known to treat OCD. However, it is possible to augment it with an SSRI such as Prozac (Fluoxetine). If you want to retain benefit from your SSRI, you may not have to give it up. Talk to your doctor about adding Wellbutrin as an augmentation agent.

Wellbutrin is not know to cause sexual dysfunction. In fact, it may enhance sexual function. It is used by some SSRI users to counteract the sexual side effects of that medication.

Wellbutrin may not be suitable for those who suffer from Psychosis, Paranoia or Phobias. If you suffer from any of these, prepare yourself for a possible worsening. This may include worsening of intrusive thoughts.

Perhaps the most serious danger with Wellbutrin is that it sometimes causes seizures. Don't drive do anything that requires complete motor control until you are sure that you are not susceptible to this side effect.

It may or may not benefit you. If your doctor does prescribe it to you, I suggest you take it with a lot of caution and come right off of it if you start to feel like you're not in complete control.

Hi,

I have been on Wellbutrin XL for about 2 years now. I also have intrusive thoughts. In my opinion, I don't think the Wellbutrin works well for the thoughts. I think it helps more with energy and when you are feeling down that maybe it helps with you getting out there and doing stuff...like going out with friends and stuff. As far as helping with the thoughts, I don't feel it does anything. I am also on Cymbalta but want to get off of that and get put on a medication that helps more for OCD. I was on Prozac for 11 years and it was great at first, but I felt it pooped out after all of those years. Hope this helps.

Wellbutrin enhances dopamine and norepinehprine which can help with mood and attention, but sometimes actually increases anxiety.  If you try Wellbutrin, start at a low dose and see how if affects you.

well its like ssri's they work for most people but for some they dont. I do not have any personal experience with them so I cannot comment any further. Sorry but the best person to talk about it to is your doctor. He is way more qualified than both of us.

personally as a psychologist I recommend staying on ssri's. The side effects should stop once your body gets used to the medication. Take care.
