Hi there.  OCD does change over time...at least for me it has.  The things I used to worry about are not so bad now.  For checking that is what I do.  If I'm worried about the door being locked I say out loud "The door is locked" and then I walk away.  I do not allow myself to go back and look when the panic sets in.  What I do then is I do controlled breathing.  It is hard to think rationally when you are feeling out of control.  So say it out loud, don't go back, and then do this breathing technique.  Deep breath in through your nose and hold it for 5 seconds, and count this out in your head, then let it all out through your mouth.  You can practice this at first lying down with your hands on your stomach.  Afterwards this is a technique that you can do anywhere at any time and nobody will even know you are doing it.  You cannot give into the thought.  You can check it once but that is all.

I forgot to mention that when you say it out loud you remember that you did indeed lock the door or turn off the iron or the stove, etc.
