dirty gloves used for drawing blood sample...

hello sir i had a blood sample taken recently...i saw the gloves used by the nurse were dirty looking ...not clean and might have been used fer other patients to draw blood too.... the syringe n needle used were clean...do i have a chance of getting infected by any blood borne pathogens?...i m worried for hbv and hiv.....pls lemme know do i hv any chance of being infected this way...?

Hello,

It is very difficult to tell you that you have no risk; however, you are at very, very low risk given the information that you provided.

It is never wrong to ask health care providers if they have washed their hands; and, certainly, inquiring about new/unused gloves is reasonable as well.

Based on the description of your experience, guidelines do not provide definitive recommendations on whether or not you should have testing performed.

However, as noted in my first posting, there is minimal risk of transmission of blood borne pathogens given the description of events that you described.

Blood borne pathogens include but are not limited to hepatitis b and c, HIV.

As always, discuss your specific concerns with your health care provider.
