Ankle fusion

Hi Dr.Gross,I was recently told that I would benefit from an ankle fusion.I was also told that while physically I am a good candidate for an ankle replacement my age isn't on my side (I'm 44)  My question is,can you have a replacement done after you have had a fusion? I am quite ready do be out of pain and knocking off the meds but I don't want to just jump at something without a little research. Thanks for your time!

If you cannot tolerate the brace, then you shouldn't wear it. The purpose was to relieve pain, if it is causing pain, then it is a fail.

Thanks again for your expertice. I have another question if you don't mind.My surgeon suggested that I wear an ASO brace to see if we could take care of some of the pain.-I have been wearing it for a week & my ankle seems to hurt more at the end of the day.Could this just be me getting used to it or should I quit wearing it? Once more,thanks-it is hard to get quick answers from Drs here in Canada.

Although a fusion can be converted to a replacement, the success rate is compromised significantly by the soft tissue scarring and lost motion. If anything, it is more common to convert an ankle replacement to a fusion. I just saw a patient who i did an ankle fusion on 15 years ago because he hurt his knee playing basketball (his ankle is great). Which ever you choose be sure you go to an orthopedist who specializes in surgery of the foot and ankle and has experience with the operation.
