Broken Fibula and Tibia Recovery

Hello,

I broke my fibula/Tibia in Feb 2007. I had two surgeries and an external fixator was put in while I recovered. They put rods and screws in as well. I went through physical therapy, but to be honest didn't do my exercises at home like I should have been doing. Since that time, I have been exercising again after the doctor gave me the ok. I was doing spin classes and now recently I have tried running and stepping up my exercise and i'm getting a lot of pain in my shin area where the surgery was. It's right where the fixator was. I'm wondering if this is because I still need to build up strength in my leg or a combination of the strength and maybe the metal hitting tendons and causing pain. Is this normal a little over a year after?
