Cannot bend my thumb finger

By birth my thumb finger is impossible to bend. Both the right and left. It is thin in nature when it is compared with normal thumb finger.I would like to know why is that so and do other people have the same state. Most important thing to tell you is it is not disturbing me in doing any work. I can write well, hold anythting properly etc. But just wanna know the reason behind this...

Thank you sir.

I have the same experience. The second joints of both of my thumbs show up as normal in x-rays but I’m unable to bend them on my own. If I restrict the lower part of my thumb near the palm I can manage to wiggle the second joint a small amount. I lack the wrinkles apparently gained from moving one’s joints and the thumb narrows around my middle slightly. My mom is unable to bend her first joints, the ones closest to her palm. It was an interesting party trick growing up and a way to delight kids now. Kind of a built in dad joke. It hasn’t really hindered me in except for when it comes to opening large jars: I can’t wrap my thumb around the lid and sometimes need assistance from my very accommodating girlfriend. We get a kick out of the tradition reversal. Other than that it’s something I rarely even remember being different about myself than most people.

Hey, both of my thumbs can't bend, since birth, and I don't have the 'wrinkles' where the joints should be. When I try to force it, it goes a little way and makes that knuckle cracking 'pop' sound. Anyway, I've never had any trouble using them. I play guitar just fine and most people don't notice them until I show them. And yeah, they're a bit skinnier than the usual.

My right thumb is like this also, my mother has two that don't bend, they don't have the little wrinkle things, when she was born they were going to cut two of her toes off and put them where her thumbs are, they didn't though.  but both of us have no problem at all, my right thumb is just as strong, I'm actually right handed, I draw,  I'm just curious as to how many people have this and what causes it, I'm not bothered by it but I've never seen anyone else with it and it's obviously genetic since I got it too and I'd like to know if my daughter (if i ever have one) could get this, I have two brothers and they don't have it

I’m 14 and my thumb joint closest to my wrist doesn’t bend, I can move it a tiny bit if I use the other hand to bend it, it is definitely hereditary as my mum and I both have it but my brothers don’t. I didn’t notice until recently and I asked my friends but their thumb joints all work normally. It doesn’t affect my day to day life but it can be annoying as I can’t do somethings as well as other people because of it. I haven’t been to the doctors about it as it doesn’t affect me much but I was just curious if others experienced this .

I think you should consult the orthopedic surgeon. It is because of some problem during pregnancy  with your mother. It can be treated by you consult the Orthopedist.

hello. i am 16 years of age. my thumbs have not been able to bend since birth. i have only noticed this in the past three years, when my friend pointed it out. Ever since, i have been relentlessly bullied every single day for three years. my friends will not stop telling people i have unopposable thumbs when i meet them for the first time. its been extremely hard for me to make new friends as everyone in my school has been calling me 'no bones'. this is a result of the fact i tried to tell my 'close' friends that i read up on the situation and me not having the correct amount of bones may be the cause. this is tearing my life apart. for me, it is not genetic as none of my family share this horrendous trait, and even they, of all people, bully me. after years and years of searching, i think i have found the condition. i had to go very deep into the internet to find this disease, and i must say... its heartbreaking. the disease i have found, my friends, is called ligma. goodnight, sleep tight... dont let the bullies bite!

I'm 45 now. Never able to flex the thumbs at second joint. I don't think it's every restricted me though. My mum was talking medication for epilepsy when I was born. I asked a doctor about it and they said they could do surgery to allow it to bend but it wouldn't recoil or something. There's no pain.

Hello.. My thumbs don't bend at the first knuckle closest to my wrist.. I don't think outs arthritis or any joint problem.. I as born that way.. I believe outs hereditary cause I have 3 kids and 2 of them have the same issue.. One has the normal thumbs.. Just to add, my big toes have the same problem.. That same knuckle won't bend back enough.. If I kneel down, it won't bend enough to drop my knee to the floor.. But, I live a normal life and have no restrictions.. I think it's just a thing some of us are born with..

I am 13 and I have the same with my thumb not bending and unusually thin and it is a bit weaker but just in my right thumb. I had x-rays when I was younger and I don't remember anything about the problem except that I was just born missing a few bones. I have no problems except some people have asked me what is wrong with it and I just said nothing. It is weaker than a normal thumb and I can't do things like hold a bowling ball so I have to do it with two hands. I wish there was a way to get it back to normal as it can be a problem and I am always contious of it and try not to show it to people. I am glad it's not just me with this and can relate to others but I do wish that there would be a way to solve it but I think I would have it fixed by now if there was. It's hard to talk to my parents about it and ask them if I can do anything about it so I never have. I just hate that if I need to tell someone about it such as my boyfriend that they would leave me just because of it. Thanks :)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

I would want to check if you have any other associated developmental anomaly.

It may be due to some problem in pregnancy with your mother (drug reaction or infections) or genetic inheritance.

I would suggest you to go for X-rays of both your thumbs and follow up with an orthopedician for examination and further suggestions.

Take care!
