Chondromalcia Patella

51 yo F, diagnosed with Runners Knee, have been in pain, swollen and limping for 7 months.  Dr. says to just keep coming back for cortisone, but it really does nothing.  I can hardly walk, I am in pain, do I have to live like this?  Is my doctor on the right track?  Maybe I have meniscus tears???  It affects everything... walking, sleeping, working.  Help!!!

No, no MRI has been done.  Just a set of xrays that showed no arthritis.

Hi there!

Well, without knowing the relevant clinical details or a detailed clinical evaluation it would be difficult to comment specifically on the situation. If an MRI has been done and there have been no abnormalities detected other than chondromalacia; it is highly unlikely for the symptoms to be related to another cause. Management with chondromalacia is largely conservative with rest, anti-inflammatory medications and physiotherapy. I would suggest discussing the situation and the suggested management plan in detail with your treating orthopedician.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!

Also, I have had xrays only.  Shows no arthritis.  In both knees, although one is worse than the other.  I don't know if I should be looking at more tests or another doctor.  I haven't straightened one leg out since Thanksgiving, I am gaining weight from inactivity, and I am starting to walk pigeon-toed from the limping.
