Cracked Pelvis

I suddenly developed pain at the top of my right leg.  After a couple of days, I could not walk without crutches.  The pain seemed to go down my leg.  My GP sent me for an X-Ray which confirmed I have a cracked pelvis.  I am finding it incredibly hard to sleep because of the pain.  Even though I have the pain on the right side, it seems to ease when lying on it in bed.  I was informed at the Hospital that there was nothing much the Doctors could do for this and advised me to rest.  I am usually an active person (I am a sprightly 68 year old) and this is driving me mad because I cannot get around without crutches  Some times of the days the pain eases but comes back.  I am taking painkillers 2 X 4 times a day which help.

Is there anything further I can do to alleviate the pain and. although I was told by the Hospital to rest, it is possible that exercise could help.  How does one get a cracked pelvis without falling or physical exercise.  How long does it take to recover from a cracked pelvis.

What should I be doing to help the situation.

Many Thanks

As a result of a recent slip on wet surface outside I too fractured my pelvis.  In fact it is a non-displaced fracture of the pelvis, which was extremely painful.  Now is the 5th week of recovery and it is getting easier, Down to 2 ibruprofen a day, trying to do without now though.  Started to feel more like myself, was feeling pretty down in dumps.

I would avoid seeing a chiroparctor, they will do nothing to speed the healing process and may cause further injury by forceful spinal manipulation. As others have mentioned,, rest and pain control are the reccommended methods for dealing with a non-displaced pelvic fracture.

hello I to have a cracked pelvis but I was in a really bad car accident, I am not in a cast but I am on crutches. The pain comes and goes but, the best way to deal with it is cont rest and prayer.Giving yourself time to heal is a very difficult process but, its worth putting the time in to it. You have to learn patience and trust me with a 9 month-old son its a challenge. so be strong my friend

I would suggest that you see a chiropractor to help, they will help you heal properly so that your muscles will be balanced.  One or two treatments can help you understand what you need to do to heal.   For pain management I use lidocain patches and they have been a blessing.

Hi,
The recovery period depends upon the nutritional status and other associated co-morbidities if present.
In case you are Calcium deficient and you have chronic disease like diabetes or hypertension then the recovery will take long time to happen and hence delayed bone healing.
Keep me informed if you have any queries.
Bye.

Hi,
The treatment for closed fracture of pelvis is indeed rest and anti-inflammatory for pain. If the fracture is open then the fracture could be approximated with the help of external fixator.
It is not possible to help the fracture per se with the help of exercise but definitely yes you should be doing exercise to strengthen the muscle supporting the pelvis.
It is an age related issue which is commonly found in older age.
I think you should be taking rest, anti-inflammatory for pain and exercise for help strengthen the muscle, I think pretty much what you are doing.
I think this should help in long run.
Keep me informed if you have any queries.
Bye.
