Chronic pain on shin bone - tender to touch, slight lump

I have had pain in my shin bone for the past 6-7 years. It doesn't hurt most of the time, but it is always tender to the touch. It covers about 2 inches on the interior side of my right shin bone, and there is a slight bulge that most other people can barely feel. It sometimes bothers me when I do a lot of running, or if I sit on my knees. I would describe the pain as dull and achey, and tender to the touch. I am starting to get a similar pain in the other leg, but it is not nearly as bad, yet.

I used to get shin splints (at least that's what I think it was) several years ago while running. I have never been much of a runner, so if the pain would come on, I'd give up running for awhile. I run 2 days a week on average now, and am otherwise active most days of the week (soccer, hiking, strength training, other cardio).

I went to the doctor when I first started getting the pain, and she didn't really tell me anything. Since then, no one's been able to tell me what the problem is. I'd like to go a specialist (I have a PPO so I don't need a referral), but I'm not sure what kind of doctor to see.

Hey, its symptomatic of  radicular sciatica and is most likely posture related, stemming from the l5-s1 and down, also slight misalignment of the hips, slightly crooked hip profile its definitely Sciatica related. Check the shoe soles for an obvious uneven wearing pattern, a sloping or gradient indicating your messed up from yr back to the feet.

Did you ever get any answers from the doctor? I have the same symptoms, and my doctor didn't know what to think when I told her about it either. My legs have be tender to the touch for at least 5 years and I can feel small bumps. It would be great to know what kind of doctor you went to and what they said as I don't know where to go next.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
Since the pain has been there for so long, it may be a ganglion cyst or it may be a clot in the vein or artery. Sometimes there is a localized patch of weak bone or bone tumor. It would be great if you can see a vascular specialist and get dopplar ultrasound of leg vessels if the specialist feels it is a clot in deep veins. Otherwise, you may need X-rays of the leg bones (your GP could ask for these). Then you may need to consult an orthopedic specialist.  Hope this helps. Take care!

The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history.
