Full patellectomy - knee support brace suggestion

When I was 16 my knee cap was accidentally blown off with a shotgun when a hunting dog stepped on a gun while being pulled out of a blind. The remaining pieces of my patella were removed and torn tendons were surgically put back together. I have had several surgeries since then.  I am now 51 years old, and despite still having beebees in the knee area and a missing knee cap I have been fairly active, but now have arthritis surrounding the area and my knee occasionally pops out of alignment. I build livestock fence on hilly terrain and rope riding my horses.
I would like to know what knee brace I could use to give it the best support possible (without being too hot when wearing) while doing these activities?

Hi tersey71,

I realize your question is from 2016 but I thought I'd write you just in case you are still interested in a choice of knee braces to assist you.

In 2008, I had a patellectomy due to a work related accident in 2007. I had the closed manipulation done 5 months after the surgery because physical therapy was not helping to get hardly any flexion. Once I achieved full flexion and extension, my leg seemed really weak. I was tired of using immobilizer braces. I went to a local prosthetic store and saw a sleek looking brace. I took a picture of it and showed my orthopedic surgeon. He said it is an ACL brace and he thought it would give me the support I needed. He was right. In 2012, I began wearing my first Donjoy Defiance III knee brace. I am on my 3rd one now. Because of the atrophy in my leg, I will have to wear a brace for the rest of my life and this brace seems to be the one that gives me the most support. I hope your knee is better and you do not have to wear a brace indefinitely but if you do, I recommend the Donjoy Defiance III. It is a custom fitted brace. Your doctor should be able to help. Best wishes to you and stay positive. You'll be fine...
