I tripped and fell and hurt my foot.

Please can someone help?  I tripped and fell and hurt my foot. I heard a snap. At first I devoloped a big goose egg on the side of my foot. The swelling was just above my ankel at the widest part of my foot. Within minutes,my whole foot was huge. The hospital took x-rays and said the sweeling have my bones pushed together. This means I have to repete the x-rays in 8-10 days. This was 5 days ago and I still have very little movement in my toes and they( my toes)  feel like they are flared. The general pain has subsidted mostly except for this painfull feeling of my toes being flare.
I do not know if it's broken, sprained or what...Thank You!

Hi I am interested in what the final answer was.  This sounds exactly what happened to me two weeks ago...I also hear a pop and had/have a goose egg.  Repeat xrays revealed no breaks or fractures and I have a Dr's appt today for ?ligament damage.  I still have to wear the air cast as it hurts soo bad to walk with out it.  Most of the swelling has gone down, except where the "goose egg" was and around the ankle (the pain however is directly ontop of the foot where the goose egg is).
I hope you are feeling better and healing, but am really curious as to your outcome.
Thank you,

I fell down from two foot height and landed unevenly on a concrete surface I injured my ankle three weeks ago. There was immediate swelling at my left toe but no bruise.  I went to the doctor two days after and he said that it was just a bad sprain. But the severity of the pain was same so i went to another doctor after 10 days and X- ray report came negative.I am feeling pain at the fifth metatarsal bone of my left ankle. I am on crutches since three weeks though there is no fracture at fifth metatarsal bone. The pain is less compared to the first week now but I don't know whats going on in my ankle. can anyone tell me what could be the problem in my ankle.? what should i do in order to heal faster?
The pain is coming from base i.e head of the fifth metatarsal bone, some what at joint  i.e stable zone and pain is persisting to the inside of the ankle ligaments that is making me unstable to stand and bear any weight.

Hi,
The mid-foot consists of 2 rows of bones; Proximally, the navicular and the cuboid articulate with the hind-foot through the Chopart joint.
Distally, the 3 cuneiform bones and cuboid articulate with the metatarsals via the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joint.
Ligaments attach all but the 1st and 2nd metatarsal bases to the adjacent metatarsals.
The strong Lisfranc ligament connects the 2nd metatarsal to the medial cuneiform.
The forefoot consists of the 5 metatarsals and 14 phalanges (2 phalanges in the hallux and 3 in each of the lesser toes).
Hence, fracture metatarsal would cause limited movement in your toes.
Keep me informed if you have any other queries in general.
Bye.

Hi,
I feel it is in your interest to see a doctor as early as possible.
First thing is that you should be taking care of injury which has already occurred and not been repaired still.
Second it will continue to cause inflammatory reaction and continue to swell and pain till the pathology is not corrected.
Third if you delay further you would consciously get harmed due to injury.
Keep me informed if you have any queries.
Bye.

Thank you for your opinion! I do have some new concerns. I had a doctors appointment with a podiatrist set for tomorrow but they (the office) called and now it is set for next Wednesday. I still can not stand on my foot because of a sharp pain on the side of my foot. I have very little movement in my toes and this is the 10th day.  I do move them with my fingers because I know I should.
Over the phone-the doctor said he thinks I have a fracture metatarsal.
Do you think it is okay to wait untill next Wednesday or should I call another doctor to be seen at an early date?
Thank you,Koolmom

Hi,
I feel your symptoms are suggesting that you might have Tarsal Tunnel syndrome as you have shooting pain, numbness, swelling around foot with x-rays not showing any fractures.
I think if bone pathology is not clear repeat x-rays are indeed required.
X-rays, including AP and lateral views, may be obtained to rule out other pathological processes. Electro-diagnostic studies may be used to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment: Rest, ice, NSAIDs, lidocaine patch, and/or a steroid and anesthetic injection are helpful.
Surgical release is reserved for severe cases that are not responsive to conservative care.
Keep me informed.
Bye.

I am sorry but I guess I did not make it clear. It is not my ankle it is my foot.
When I fell my foot fell over itself and than it twisted. When it twisted I heard a snap.At first I devoloped a big goose egg on the side of my foot. The swelling was just above my ankel at the widest part of my foot on the outside of my foot up across top of foot. Within minutes,my whole foot was huge.
I have never had anything wronge with my foot before.
I have sharp shooting pains and a all over ache across the top of my foot. The bottom of my instep aches also.
I can not bear weight on my foot yet.
My toes feel like they are flared but they are not.
It is wrapped in a ace bandage and I do elevate it and put ice on it.
I also take Aleve and asprin for the pain.
Thank you for any help you can give!

Hi,
The most common problem after an ankle injury could be Ligament injury or an ankle fracture.
Less common problems include capsular injury, posterior tibial tendonitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), and anterior impingement syndrome.
I would like to know where the pain is exactly.
Your events while falling suggests that it might be an ankle sprain.
Almost all ankle sprains are lateral sprains and occur after an inversion injury. The typical history a patient will give is falling over a turned-in (inverted) ankle while playing a sport or while walking.
Do you experience any locking or catching in your ankle? Have you ever had surgery on your ankle?
What is the quality of your ankle pain (sharp, shooting, dull, aching, burning)?
Is there anything you have done for your ankle that has helped the pain? Are you able to bear weight on your ankle?
I would be interested to answer any queries.
Keep me informed.
Bye.
