Knee Pain

Hello -
I have a couple of questions regarding some knee pain I am experiencing.  I am a 38 year old female with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and disk narrowing in my lower back.  I have been told that this is the cause of frequent lower back pain, right hip pain and occasional syatic nerve issues.  I am not sure, however, if this is the cause of my knee pain on the right side, but I also fell on this same knee back in the Fall of 2007 and I am not sure if that caused my current knee pain or made an existing problem even worse.  Now, I am dealing with alot of pain and stiffness.  I do not feel any popping or grinding.  Most pain is across the top of the knee cap and along the interior side of my knee.  The pain is present while walking, climbing stairs and when I first stand after sitting for a long period of time.  Additionally, if I stand for too long, my knee is extremely sore and stiff.  The worst pain is that which wakes my in the middle of the night at least 1-2 times per week.  I will be sleeping on my side and wake with excruciating pain, as if an ice pick is driving through the side of my knee (interior side) and into the joint.  I cannot straighten or bend my knee at this point without using my hands to manually move my leg.  I am taking Aleve to no avail.  I am writing in hope for some thoughts or ideas as to what I might be dealing with.  Thank you in advance for your time.

Hi Jewel,
Have you posted on this forum before? Is it that I have answered you before?
Well if you have bone infarcts it refers to necrosis of the cellular elements of the bone and marrow.
Ischemic cell death and necrosis is the result of a reduced blood supply to the bone, which in turn can be due to either an intrinsic or extrinsic abnormality in the blood vessel supplying part of the bone or a combination of both.
What symptoms you are having?
When were you diagnosed with this condition?
Keep me informed.
Bye.

I have just had the same complaint
I had a painful knee and it also had some swelling and stiffness
so I went and had an exray
and ct scan
it came back that I have a bone infarct which I am still not sure of what it is
they say its something like the blood supply not getting throught to my bones and I have been refered to an orthapedic surgeon
So I would suggest you have an xray and go from there
cheers

Hi Lilvin,
I can understand your condition as to painful it would be.
Your symptoms of pain above the knee joint and anteriorly are suggestive of Patello-femoral disorder.
Your other symptom of pain while climbing, standing and knee getting sore is suggestive of Osteoarthritis.
Your symptom of awakening at night with pain is suggestive Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome or compressive pathology of any nerve.
I think you need complete evaluation with help of an orthopaedician and neurologist for likely pathology. You also need thorough imaging study of spine and knee joint. It should include a MRI study too.
Initially you can be started with analgesics and you can also apply Glucosamine and Chondroitin cream.
Keep me informed if you have any queries.
Bye.

I should add that when I said that I cannot straighten or bend my knee without using my hands to manually move it, I am referring to the severe pain episodes in the middle of the night.  Thanks again!  ~lilvin
